📣 Spotlight Sunday - Florida Preservation Awards📣 Vizcaya Museum and Gardens - Restoration, Rehabilitation & Adaptive Use (2023) Vizcaya, a name derived from the Basque term for an elevated place, was constructed in 1916 to serve as the winter residence of industrialist James Deering. As an avid patron of the arts Deering sought the guidance of Paul Chalfin, a painter and designer from New York, to bring his vision of a Florida home to life. Together, they embarked on a creative journey, blending elements of Baroque, Rococo, Mannerist and Louis XIV styles, adapted to suit a beach house in South Florida. The site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A collaborative team effort drove the restoration project that included cleaning and water repellent treatments, roofing, preservation and repair of stucco and clay tile roofs and lightning protection for the historic buildings, all carefully considered during the roof's design and construction. Key to the project’s success was the careful selection of appropriate new roof tiles that captured the character of the original 100-year-old clay tile roof. We're proud to share that January 17, 2024, has officially been declared Dr. Joel Hoffman Day by Miami-Dade County, commemorating 20 years of service by Vizcaya’s beloved CEO and Executive Director. Dr. Hoffman has been instrumental in positioning Vizcaya as a world-renowned museum, spearheading the estate’s formal accreditation and securing its title as a National Historic Landmark. Among many other fundamental projects and achievements, he has also led Vizcaya’s transition to an independently managed non-profit, the restoration of Vizcaya Village, and countless HR initiatives for the betterment of staff. Join all of us at Vizcaya in sending heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Hoffman, wishing him many more years of leadership at the helm of this great estate.

Vizcaya is proud to announce the 2024 Participatory Public Art (PPA) program. In tandem with the estate’s developing Land Acknowledge, the theme "Still Here" seeks to highlight not only the history of the land, but also the vibrant, ongoing presence and culture of South Florida's Indigenous communities through multi-faceted art. This unique opportunity involves leading art-making workshops, as well as a culminating event to engage the Miami-Dade community in a creative process. The chosen artist will receive a $10,000 honorarium and an additional budget for production.
