It’s been an encouraging year for developments in metastatic breast cancer (mBC), with a host of scientific advances and new treatment options offering hope to patients. As we move beyond #MBCAwarenessDay, here are six big headlines from 2024 from Claire Gillis, Jason Gloye, Nichole Davies, Susanne Bobadilla, PhD, Sarah-Jane Barker and Alexandra Lewis. #1. Pembrolizumab followed by chemotherapy improves overall survival in patients with advanced triple-negative breast cancer. #2. Trastuzumab deruxtecan (Enhertu) offers better progression-free survival and response rates for some metastatic HER2-low and -ultralow breast cancers. #3. Abemaciclib improves progression-free survival in metastatic hormone-receptor-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer. #4. Inavolisib awarded Breakthrough Therapy Designation for PIK3CA-Mutated, HR+/HER2-negative mBC. #5. Triple combination of inavolisib, palbociclib and fulvestrant could reduce the risk of progression or death in patients with PIK3CA-mutant HR+/HER2-negative mBC. #6. Oral selective oestrogen receptor degraders (SERDs) could transform treatment of hormone receptor-positive advanced breast cancer. This winning visual aid challenges PCPs, pulmonologists and allergists to rescue this underperforming category by displaying asthma attack data and depicting the unpredictable rise in inflammation in a graphic format.
