Continuing our journey through 125 years of innovation in school furniture, we arrive at the transformative 1950s. 🌟 If you’re just joining us, we’re celebrating VS's rich history by spotlighting the milestones that have made us a leader in the industry. In the 1950s, VS collaborated with architect Karl Nothhelfer to develop the iconic skid-frame chair. Initially produced in wood and later in tubular steel (1973), this chair addressed the cramped conditions of school benches by separating the seating space from the desk. It even allowed for al-fresco teaching as it could be carried outdoors. With over 6 million sold, it has become the most sold student chair in the world. This classic chair stands as a reference to the school environment and a symbol of life-long learning. This innovative design, born from co-creation, continues to be a staple in classrooms globally. Stay with us as we explore more groundbreaking moments and partnerships that define our legacy. #VS125Years #SkidFrameChair #InnovativeDesign #ClassroomFurniture #LifeLongLearning #InspiredbyVS

"The most important message that this building has for children is, 'We knew you were coming.'" – Beth Hebert Located in Winnetka, Illinois, Crow Island School is a true landmark in educational design. The school revolutionized educational architecture with its completion in 1940. Designed by Eero Saarinen, Eliel Saarinen, and Perkins, Wheeler & Will, this school set new standards with its child-centric approach. Key features included modular classrooms with outdoor courtyards for flexible, natural light-filled learning spaces, child-scaled interiors making environments comfortable and engaging for young students, and flexible design to support varied teaching methods and activities. Initially met with resistance due to its unconventional design and cost concerns, architects and educators overcame skepticism in the community by demonstrating how the innovative environment would enhance student engagement and learning outcomes. This pioneering effort has left a lasting legacy, influencing modern educational spaces worldwide. 🌍✏️ VS is proud to have collaborated with Crow Island School to update the furniture, reflecting its ongoing dedication to providing students with the best education possible. A special thanks to everyone who helped create this inspiring video. 🎥✨ Dina Sorensen, Assoc AIA, LEED AP Peter Brown, FAIA Beth Hebert Julie Pfeffer Perkins&Will #EducationalDesign #Architecture #Innovation #ProgressiveEducation #EeroSaarinen #CrowIslandSchool #StudentsFirst
