About us
The Walder Foundation was established by Joseph and Elizabeth Walder to address critical issues impacting our world. The Foundation’s five areas of focus—science innovation, environmental sustainability, the performing arts, migration and immigrant communities, and Jewish life—are an extension of the Walders’ lifelong passions, interests, and their personal and professional experiences. We are a private family foundation based in Skokie, Illinois. Our grantmaking is concentrated primarily in the Chicago metropolitan area with additional support for select projects around the globe that align with our values and program areas.

Platform Award recipient Sam Thousand is a multi-instrumentalist, singer/writer, and producer/composer, a 3Arts Recipient with 15+ years of experience in live performance art, curation, and self-management. As a full-time performing artist in Chicago, Sam has held various performance residencies and composed original music for films, podcasts, and dance theater. Sam has held various performance residencies, and has composed original music for films, podcasts, and dance theater and is also a business owner and social entrepreneur. As the co-founder of the Chicago-based arts organization ChiBrations, Sam launches a premiere app for the performing arts community to discover and amplify Open Mics and Jam Sessions in Greater Chicago. Big on legacy, Thousand remains a teacher, learner, and sharer of knowledge to peers and youth. Platform Award recipient Myra S. is a Chicago-based puppeteer, educator, and multimedia artist. Her work often integrates analog puppets with digital technology in live stage performance. She is currently developing a new show, STRIPES, that combines light sensors and barcode technology with tabletop puppetry. Myra has been featured at the Neo-Futurists, Baltimore Crankie Festival, Chicago International Puppet Theater Festival, and National Puppet Slam. She has worked on projects in collaboration with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Asian Improv aRts Midwest, Tatsu Aoki & the MIYUMI Project, Rough House Theater, Opera-Matic, Redmoon, and Blair Thomas & Co. Myra is also a puppeteer and builder with Manual Cinema and a co-curator for “NASTY, BRUTISH & SHORT.” In 2021, she made her film debut with “GOODNIGHT SHADOW,” a short paper puppet film produced with Handmade Puppet Dreams. https://lnkd.in/gvddYyW3

The Platform Awards recipients were nominated by Chicago-based academics, field experts, and cultural leaders and chosen by a national panel of established practicing artists. Panelist Linda-Denise Fisher-Harrell, MFA, Artistic Director of Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, is a trailblazing leader who began her role in 2021 after a stellar career as a dance artist and educator. She is the first alumna, woman, and person of color to lead the Company. Born in Baltimore, Fisher-Harrell trained at the Baltimore School for the Arts, Capitol Ballet, The AILEY School, and The Juilliard School. As a dance educator, she’s been a Professor of Dance at Towson University since 2005, contributing significantly to the Ailey legacy and establishing AileyCamp Baltimore. Platform Award recipient Vershawn Sanders-Ward, MFA is a dancer, choreographer, educator, and “artivist” reshaping contemporary dance and driving social change. As the Founding Artistic Director & CEO of Red Clay Dance Company, Inc., Vershawn blends African diasporic dance forms with modern techniques. Through Red Clay Dance Company, Vershawn provides a platform for artists of diverse backgrounds to explore issues of identity, race, and social justice through dance. Vershawn’s commitment to equity and inclusion in the arts has driven her to lead numerous community engagement initiatives. She serves on the Board of Trustees for Dance/USA and is Vice-President of the Board of Directors for The Black Arts & Culture Alliance of Chicago. Vershawn showcased her innovative choreography on both national and international stages. Platform Award recipient Lisa Kaplan is a composer, educator, and pianist specializing in the performance of new work by living composers. Kaplan is the Executive Director of the four-time Grammy Award-winning sextet Eighth Blackbird . As the co-founder of the Blackbird Creative Lab, a musical educational initiative for emergent musical artists, she is passionate about forging community and mentoring musicians who will shape the future of contemporary music. Kaplan has premiered new pieces by hundreds of composers, including Andy Akiho, Jennifer Higdon, Amy Beth Kirsten, David Lang, Missy Mazzoli, Nico Muhly, Steve Reich, and Pamela Z. She has collaborated with an eclectic array of artists and musicians, such as Laurie Anderson, Jeremy Denk, Bryce Dessner, Philip Glass, and Bon Iver, J. Ivy. Platform Award recipient Darrell Jones is a performer, educator, researcher, and choreographer who has performed extensively across the United States and globally. Jones maintains long-term collaborative relationships with Bebe Miller Company and Ralph Lemon, among others. He is a two-time Bessie Award recipient and has received grants and awards including the 3Arts Award, Chicago Dancemakers Forum Lab Artist, Foundation for Contemporary Arts, and the MAP Fund.
