This week, we received the “2024 Organization of the Year” award from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. As a longstanding partner of WDFW, Conservation Northwest deeply appreciates their collaboration, support, and shared commitment to preserving and protecting Washington’s habitats, and fish and wildlife. WDFW highlighted our groundbreaking Wildlife-Recreation Coexistence Program, led by Kurt Hellmann, for being instrumental in addressing the challenges posed by the surge in outdoor recreation on public lands. Through applied science, strategic partnerships, advocacy, and outreach, this program aims to promote sustainable outdoor opportunities while minimizing recreation impacts on species and habitats. WDFW recognizes our leadership and expertise in this critical field, which will shape future recreation management strategies and policies. And yes, this award is definitely going on the shelf! 🏆🎉

We are committed to fostering outdoor spaces where all Washingtonians find belonging in fish and wildlife conservation. This commitment stems from our belief that everyone belongs outdoors.  Many people from BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and people of color) communities or who identify as LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer/questioning, asexual and many other identities such as non-binary and pansexual) are still bullied, ostracized, and discriminated against by family members, employers, and communities. We’re proud to advocate for inclusivity this Pride month — and all year round. In fact, inclusivity is engrained in the future of fish and wildlife conservation at WDFW, as outlined our 25-Year Strategic Plan, Washington Hunting and Angling Recruitment, Retention, and Reactivation (R3) Plan, and 10-year Recreation Strategy for WDFW-managed Lands.
