Congratulations to Paula Yacelga, RN Champion of Nursing Practice Award Winner Jean Paula Yacelga, Paula as she is know to her ICU colleagues, eagerly advocates for her patients. Her patients’ comfort and wellbeing are a sole focus. And in doing this, Paula takes the time to learn about the patient, including learning about their beliefs and cultural practices. She makes sure patients effectively communicate their needs. She safeguards their confidence and listens. “Paula’s superpower is her uncanny way of being compassionately forthright,” wrote the supervisor who nominated Paula for Waterbury Hospital’s first ever Champion of Nursing Practice Award. Paula is an extremely professional nurse, respectful to all interdisciplinary teammates. She is a leader in her department in following policies and best practices, constantly using nursing resources available to find answers that help her provide the best care. She is a great patient advocate, often facilitating collaboration between physicians and nurses to ensure quality. The Champion of Nursing Practice is a new award from the Department of Nursing. It is awarded to a nurse that collaborates with different disciplines in the care of a patient. This nurse advocates for the patient in the most ethical, culturally sensitive and respectful manner and who actively promotes positive evidence-based change, among other attributes. Congratulations, Paula and thank you for all you do for our patients.
