Our Water Word of the Week -- Los Angeles Aqueduct and Owens Valley --marks the 111th anniversary of the day Los Angeles began receiving water from the Eastern Sierra’s Owens Valley. Opened on Nov. 5, 1913, the 233-mile channel helped turn Los Angeles into a bustling megalopolis, but it also drained the Owens Valley nearly dry and provoked ongoing controversy. Our 2024 Northern California Tour explored the Sacramento River and its tributaries firsthand last week to learn about issues associated with a key source for the state’s water supply! Traveling across the Sacramento Valley through riparian woodland, rice fields, wildlife refuges and nut orchards, participants heard directly from experts on the history of the Sacramento River while tracking important water issues for farming and environmental uses, visited the potential location of Sites Reservoir and discussed innovations for flood management, groundwater management and salmon restoration. Thanks to all the speakers who helped along the way! * Sites Reservoir * is our Water Word of the Week. The final stop on our annual 3-day Northern California Tour this week will be the location of this proposed off-river storage basin, about 80 miles northwest of Sacramento. The State Water Board began a series of public hearings earlier this month on the project’s application for a water right permit needed to fill the 13-mile-long reservoir with Sacramento River water.
