Christiana Figueres is one of my heroes. When no one thought it was possible, she got every country on earth to agree to reach for a zero carbon economy. She both sees the big picture on this transcendent planetary moment — and also does the unglamorous work, day in day out, to make progress. At the Watershed Climate Week Summit, she shared how she balances outrage and optimism, and how she refills her energy for the daily grind. Not all #climate news is bad! Each week, Watershed employees get to hear from experts like Shaena Ulissi on topics like what the global electricity grid could look like by 2050. Here’s what we learned this week: 💡 *electricity* is the world’s largest source of greenhouse gas emissions (27% of total global emissions, ahead of transportation, manufacturing, buildings, and agriculture) 📈 even by the most conservative estimates, *the US is on track* to hit 75% renewable energy by 2035, largely thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act 🌏 not all countries are on the same trajectory, but *most are moving* toward renewables (woot) To channel Shaena: now for “some cool maps!” 😎 Check out the change from 2022 to 2025 to 2050. Purple is clean electricity (=low emissions); yellow and orange are highly emissive (aka dirty). Why does this matter? First, it helps clarify where we need further investment in clean power. Second, it helps companies set realistic climate targets—and ask their supply chains to do the same—based on realistic future scenarios. And finally—let’s celebrate humans for a minute. We’re getting some things right. 🎉

Last night, we hosted our very first "Wine about the CSRD" event at our London office! 🍷 🇬🇧 The event combined wine tasting with an informative session around the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (#CSRD), facilitated by our very own Anna Cerf. A special shout-out to sommelier Isabelle Lynch, who led the wine tasting and created an engaging experience for everyone. Thank you to all who joined us to share in this evening of education and connection around such a critical topic. With our help, Pinterest quickly identified cloud computing as its largest emissions source. The team set ambitious goals, achieving a 62% reduction in carbon emissions per AWS query and setting validated science-based targets to reduce scope 1 and 2 emissions by 39% by 2027.
