This week WBUR and CommonWealth Beacon released a poll of likely voters ahead of the November election. The poll was conducted by The MassINC Polling Group, the nonpartisan polling firm that we have worked with over many years, and was supported with funding from the Knight Election Hub. You can dive deeper into the presidential and senate race in Massachusetts, including voter issues and election integrity; public perception on a new law regarding transportation, zoning and housing density; voter division over the November ballot questions, including one that would end the use of standardized tests as a graduation requirement; as well as rising frustrations with the state legislature. Find links to all of our stories about what you need to know about the ballot questions here: https://lnkd.in/eGQAi4wE

Bail reform has become a political lightning rod in the national debate over public safety. Yet, few really know how it impacts crime. With a grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, Here & Now's Peter O'Dowd traveled to Harris County, Texas to find out, nearly five years after cash bail was eliminated for most misdemeanors there. The four-part series explores the numbers, the politics and the personal stories behind bail reform, and whether Harris County should serve as a model for the rest of the country: https://lnkd.in/ezHRj5gA

A message from new Morning Edition host, Tiziana Dearing, "I love this community. And I believe we are stronger when we understand each other and the world around us. So here is my, and our, commitment to you. We’ll be that Morning Edition that’s kept so many of us listening since we were teens — whether that was five years ago or 50. Every day, the WBUR Morning Edition team will get up early and work hard to bring you what you need to know from around the corner and around the world. We’ll bring you stories of comfort when you need them, and concern when it’s warranted. Stories that will make you laugh, and some that might make you cry; stories that will tell you something new, or explain something you wanted to understand. And we will do that with facts, and without favor, through the excellent reporting of WBUR and NPR. On this first day as your new Morning Edition host, I am so happy to say this: Good Morning, Greater Boston. I’m Tiziana Dearing. Thank you for inviting me to be part of your day." Read her full letter to the WBUR community here and tune in Thursday, September 19th to hear Tiziana in conversation with Senator Elizabeth Warren: https://lnkd.in/eBSMhe_6

Scott Tong of NPR and WBUR's Here & Now recently visited Pike County, Kentucky where coal jobs have evaporated, leaving behind an economy in decline and an addiction epidemic. These conditions, Scott found, have left residents with a sense of “stolen pride.” We chatted with him about his trip and why he was drawn to this story.
