Mark Twain is attributed to saying, “History doesn’t repeat itself, but It often rhymes.” Now in our 10th year, we continue to adapt our design and research approach to current conundrums, excitements, and curiosities. We do what our tagline says: We Design Through. While adapting to new technologies (ahem, do we need to write the two-letters?) and taking on a particularly important project this year to study what resilience means for a bellwether community: We are researching and designing for people. We are inspired by the nature of the woods, and all the beauty, calm, mystery, and reflection it brings. And we continue to work with our existing and new clients, partners and collaborators who see those same qualities in the work they shape, reshape, and share with the people in and outside of their organizations. Our team made the following ambitions ─ once just ideas ─ into something real. In 2023 we: 🤝 Worked with remarkable clients, partners and collaborators: Deloitte, LeafLabs, WillowTree / AIGA Boston, Bates College Museum of Art, Kate Wise LICSW, 240 Strings, Middletown Youth Services Bureau and a newly Maine headquartered green energy company from France, to be announced. ✏️ Co-created the #GENUX Symposium* with WillowTree and AIGA Boston and featured Chris Bransfield (Woods Creative) as moderator with Astrid Chow, MS MBA (Highmark Health) and Juhan Sonin (GoInvo & Massachusetts Institute of Technology). Creative direction and design system work developed by Amy Parker. *Pictured in this post. 🎬 Ran large scale stakeholder workshops using our Design Through™ methodology. 💻 Reported formative research findings in more innovative, video-driven ways to executive leadership at some of the world’s most well-known brands. 🌎 Reimagined the UX and UI site design for the internationally connected Smart Factory – to be launched. 💻 Created a digital tool called “ValueTransform: Business Value Assessment.” 🪶Joined the Wabanaki Alliance in Maine. 🎬 Designed and conducted a small, qualitative research pilot study to inform a 2024 large-scale study aimed at measuring how resilience can have a significant impact on community involvement in a small city. 💻 Virtually Attended Figma’s Config, Adobe Max and AIGA Design Conference. 📚 As reps from AIGA Boston, Amy Parker (Woods Creative and Clif Stoltze Stolze (Stoltze Design Group) Hosted Louise Sandhaus at Institute of Contemporary Art Boston with educator Doug Scott, artist and curator Anne Thompson, and designer and educator ramon tejada. ⚡️ Co-sponsored “Graphic Means: A History of Graphic Design Production” at SPACE with AIGA Maine. ☕ Shared unmeasurable joy with coffee, breakfast and great conversations with the team, clients and people in the technology and creative community orbits. Thanks to all involved in this wonderful creative and social science space. Bring it on 2024! – Woods

I am excited to share with you all our close-out speaker of #GENUX2024 this year -- Elizabeth Goodspeed. As It’s Nice That’s US editor-at-large, as well as an independent designer, art director, educator and writer, Elizabeth is topping off the GENUX symposium with her talk called "What Goes Around Comes Around." Elizabeth writes "In a creative world exploding with rapidly shifting trends, drawing inspiration from the past can be an unexpected superpower for designers looking to create unique and timely work. Graphic designer and archivist Elizabeth Goodspeed will discuss the limitations of contemporary moodboards, provide examples of how designers (past and present) have been inspired by historic ephemera, and share insights into how she has personally incorporated archival content into her work as a designer and writer. Elizabeth will close with some practical tips on how designers can begin to explore and engage with the past themselves." Elizabeth works between New York and Providence, she's a devoted generalist, but specialises in idea-driven and historically inspired projects. She’s passionate about lesser-known design history, and regularly researches and writes about various archive and trend-oriented topics. She also publishes Casual Archivist, a design history focused newsletter. If you want to see Elizabeth and other heavy hitters speaking, treat yourself to a professional development day with WillowTree and AIGA Boston on Friday, October 11th. Tickets are limited to this symposium featuring discussions of audiences, research and design. On Friday, October 11th, our fourth session co-speaker of #GENUX2024 is my co-founder and creative partner, Chris B., speaking with Freddie deBoer. Chris is Executive UX Research Director at Woods Creative, a Portland, ME and Greater-Boston, MA based research and design studio. He leads high profile qualitative research projects across private industry and within the public sector. He partners with design, copy, marketing, technical, and executive functions to ensure the research he and his team lead have meaningful impact. Prior to Woods Creative he worked in agency (Digitas), in-house brand (Bose), and social science research (American Institutes for Research) environments. He is a panelist, speaker, and moderator in the research and design space. Chris holds a BA in history from Wheaton College and a MS in communication theory from Clark University Graduate Studies. At GENUX, Chris and Freddie will critique the fervor over AI. What’s hype? What’s real? Is this more a reflection that we are not living in a time of technological progress compared to the past? They’ll discuss the media’s coverage of AI, the collective reaction to it, and how we may want to think about its more practical implications. If you want to see Chris and other heavy hitters speaking, treat yourself to a professional development day with WillowTree and AIGA Boston on Friday, October 11th. We're excited to see Catherine Headen and her panelists about the impacts of AI. Equally curious to hear how creative and research experts are using the technology today in their everyday workflows.

Our third session of #GENUX2024 will be a panel discussion lead by design leader Catherine Headen who has been hard at work designing a better world since the late '90s. Her philosophy is simple: We all have a story to tell. It's a designer's job to listen and weave that knowledge into positive experiences. Catherine helps start-ups, non-profits, Fortune 500 companies, entrepreneurs, and everyone in between, make their brands and experiences better through smart usable design. Catherine also serves on the board of directors with AIGA Boston. At GENUX this year, Catherine is moderating a discussion with creative and research leaders on the impacts of AI -- experts from WillowTree, IDEO and Upstatement -- all to be announced soon. If you want to see Catherine and other heavy hitters speaking, treat yourself to a professional development day with WillowTree and AIGA Boston on Friday, October 11th.
