Kim's story is a living example of resilience in the face of adversity. A former Katy resident, she relocated to the Houston area in 2017 after she lost two homes and her dad during Hurricane Harvey. Now, years later, life hasn't gotten easier for Kim. With a disabled husband to care for and the recent theft of her vehicle, she's had her fair share of challenges. However, amidst these hardships, Kim found a lifeline in WHAM and its Neighbor Choice Pantry program. "I don't know what I would've done without WHAM," Kim shared, her voice filled with gratitude. "This organization is a lifesaver." The program allows neighbors like Kim to choose foods that better meet their family's needs, offer dignity, reduce food waste, and end hunger during economic crises. Kim's appreciation extends to the staff and volunteers at WHAM, whose dedication have made a world of difference in her life. "There aren't enough services to help people who, through unfortunate events, find themselves in situations they're not supposed to be in," Kim reflected. "I'm blessed for this service." To Kim and all the clients who've placed their trust in WHAM, your strength and perseverance are inspiring. Here's hoping for brighter days ahead on your journey to self-reliance! Fighting poverty and providing healthy food to Houston families for over 40 years
About us
West Houston Assistance Ministries (WHAM) was founded after seven local churches came together in the early 80's to form a central organization that could address the needs of those coming daily through their church doors seeking help. Today, thousands in Houston still live in poverty and are struggling to meet their needs while facing tough choices on how to allocate scarce resources. This is why WHAM focuses on offering services that meet basic needs like food and clothing, prevent eviction and homelessness, like rent/mortgage and utility assistance, and provide access to education and job training to lift people out of poverty, promote independence, and connect them to tools that help them build better lives. Together with the other services we provide (Back to School, Summer Lunches, Disaster Relief, etc), we contribute to alleviating poverty and building a strong and thriving community. However, we couldn't do it on our own - individuals, businesses, organizations, churches and schools throughout Houston provide the vital resources and volunteer hours to help over 132,000 clients in 2022. Every donation - be it financial, time volunteered, food items, or items donated to our Resale Store, as well as every purchase from our store, benefits the families we serve. This allows us to live out our mission: to serve those who come to us for help regardless of background, belief or circumstance. Our Core Programs Food Pantry (the largest in West Houston); Financial assistance (for rent/utilities); Employment & Education Services (ESL, GED, financial literacy, resume building and job coaching, etc); WHAM Resale Store (Aka Second Blessing)

"I saw this individual struggling with food and provisions we had just provided her for free. I rushed out of my office to assist her. She shared that a friend was coming to pick her up and help her. I asked if she was okay. She responded, "Yes," and offered, "God bless you." "Our finest moments are when we help others, particularly the vulnerable stranger. Set aside your comfort and fear and show love and compassion to those in need. Your soul will soar." Rev. Dr. Mark Brown CEO - West Houston Assistance Ministries

Celebrating Resilience: Jazmine and Nicole's Journey Three years after being helped by WHAM's holistic programs, Jazmine and her daughter Nicole stopped by to share their incredible progress. Having once been unemployed, homeless, hungry, and alone, Jazmine is now gainfully employed, housed, and on her way to affording her own car. Her determination is an example to follow as she is also working hard to ensure that her daughter receives a quality education and pursues her dreams of becoming a musician. WHAM's case management team takes immense pride in supporting families and helping them transform challenges into opportunities for growth and success. We’re grateful for Jazmine's and Nicole's visit and proud to witness their resilience and incredible journey. "The generous will themselves be blessed, for they share their food with the poor." - Proverbs 22:9 Did you know that 20% of Houstonians face food insecurity while nearly 40% of our food supply goes to waste? Second Servings is changing that story every single day! Since 2015, they've rescued over 15 million pounds of food valued at more than $103 million, delivering high-quality, fresh meals to over 150 local nonprofits. From gourmet sandwiches to fresh produce, they're turning potential waste into nourishing meals for families across Houston. We’re proud to be the recipients of their labor to ensure many of our neighbors in need don’t have to go to bed hungry. Let’s celebrate their constant collaboration to sustain our mission at WHAM. #WHAMministries #WHAMimpact #CommunityService #FightingPoverty
