“If we want our arts and culture organizations to thrive, we need to also invest in the physical spaces where high-quality programs are happening.” – WPF Program Director Barbara Wong on the Foundation’s $2 million grant to the Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz and Performing Arts to address building improvements and repairs. Check out this great Fox 29 Philadelphia, WTXF piece by Bill Anderson discussing the Clef Club’s vast history and future of its facility featuring performers, staff, board, and WPF’s own Barbara Wong. https://lnkd.in/eHCTrKRG

High-quality civic space must be a top priority for stronger communities.
Americans Are Lonely and Disconnected. Better Civic Spaces Can Help. We need more welcoming public places where people can connect in person — high-quality, well-maintained parks, trails, libraries and community centers. Investing in them is good for us and good for democracy. In Governing, William Penn Foundation executive director Shawn McCaney makes the case that a strong civic commons is essential for a strong democracy. #civicinfrastructure #civicspace #democracy #philanthropy #government #publicspace #loneliness https://lnkd.in/eUwdMXVs

New funding opportunities are now live! We are pleased to share that we’ve just released eight Requests for Proposals (RFPs) across our Arts and Culture, Children and Families, and Environment and Public Space programs. Our new process of applying through an RFP is more simple and streamlined, with one common application across all of our programs. We are accepting applications now through October 25 for these eight areas. We’re also offering optional informational webinars covering the details of each RFP next week - full details are on our website. If you have a project that addresses an RFP, we hope you will submit a proposal. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/eFG5N3kS

🗞 A new study conducted by The Pew Charitable Trusts found that generally, #Philadelphia spends more on public spaces in whiter, richer neighborhoods. The major exception, however, is the City's Rebuild PHL program, under which neighborhoods considered to be the most disadvantaged saw 20% more investment than the citywide average. Our investment in #RebuildPHL is an encapsulation of our mission to get more resources to more people, especially in communities that have experienced disinvestment. Funding these eight projects helped to inform our next strategic plan, and how we plan to award capital funding moving forward. As our Chief Philanthropy Officer Elliot Weinbaum said, “One of the things that we heard repeatedly from stakeholders was that they wanted to see the foundation invest its funds in improving existing resources and assets in our communities, rather than building new ones.” https://lnkd.in/e-KjcPPQ

Philadelphia is planning major renovations to “cap” high-traffic roadways in an effort to reclaim parts of the city that have been lost to them – thus expanding equitable access to public spaces and waterfronts, reconnecting communities that were physically divided, and prioritizing pedestrians. We are proud to have invested over $30 million in planning and development to help move these two projects forward, and are so excited to see them become reality in the coming years. https://lnkd.in/eUZnRc8k

WPF is thrilled to announce its recent investment of $24 million in one-time capital improvement grants to five arts and culture organizations and three public space projects! Seen as hubs for human connection, community, and belonging, this cohort of grantees helped inform the Foundation’s thinking around how to provide capital support as part of our new grantmaking approach launched earlier this summer. Big congratulations to Center City District, Fairmount Park Conservancy, Mann Center for the Performing Arts, Philadelphia Ballet, Philadelphia Clef Club, The Philadelphia Orchestra, Philadelphia 2026, and Philadelphia Zoo on your awarded grants, and thank you for your continued positive impacts on the people and communities of Greater Philadelphia.
