Developing Simple Tools for Overlooked Areas in Surgery

About us

Winter Innovations is a medical device startup developing simple tools for overlooked areas in orthopedic surgery to improve patient outcomes. Winter Innovations has developed a patented two-part needle technology that fundamentally changes how stitching can be performed. This technology is the basis of the company’s flagship product called EasyWhip®, a specialty suturing needle that will simplify and standardize “whip stitching” in ligament and tendon reconstruction surgery. EasyWhip™ received 510(k) premarket clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in May 2021.

We would like to congratulate Dr. Oscar Rojas, DPM, MBA, AACFAS on his first surgical case with EasyWhip®! Dr. Rojas skillfully completed an Achilles tendon repair employing our signature WhipLock™ stitch. This technique allows users to create a secure locking stitch to distribute the suture load, but with 50% fewer needle passes than a Krackow. Fewer needle holes saves time in the OR and reduces tissue damage. When asked about his experience, here’s what Dr. Rojas had to say: “Using EasyWhip® for this Achilles case was a game-changer. The WhipLock™ stitch simplified the procedure, making it more efficient without compromising security. I could really see the benefits of reducing needle passes, and the patient’s tissue integrity was better maintained. I’m looking forward to incorporating EasyWhip® in future cases!” Thank you, Dr. Rojas! Are you ready to try your first surgical case with EasyWhip®? We are excited to welcome Dr. Vanisaben Patel, DPM, AACFAS to the growing EasyWhip® family! Dr. Patel recently performed a beautiful peroneal tendon repair using our innovative two-part needle. A key feature of EasyWhip® is its ability to enable users to whip stitch around a fixed tendon with ease. As illustrated, users no longer need to worry about releasing the tendon or dancing around an Allis clamp. Here’s what Dr. Patel had to say: “Solid repair with EasyWhip®! Great invention!” Are you ready to join the EasyWhip® family? Visit https://lnkd.in/gczvFG8 to request your demo kit today! #EasyWhip #footandankle

Discover the versatility of EasyWhip® stitching techniques! With our innovative two-part needle, users have the ability to create both a whip stitch or WhipLock™ stitch with efficiency. EasyWhip® is the only needle that allows you to whip stitch when the tendon is fixed at both ends (either on a prep stand or still in the body). Plus, with the WhipLock™ stitch, you get enhanced security with 50% fewer needle passes – meaning less tissue damage and reduced OR time. In a recent study (Diaz et al., 2024), EasyWhip® demonstrated mechanical properties similar to conventional needles for ultimate load failure and tissue elongation. However, EasyWhip® is the only device that can create both the whip stitch and locking stitches. ASMAR Article: https://lnkd.in/eeKKKAHZ Stitch Technique Demo Video: https://lnkd.in/eVZcbSmC

Peroneal Tendon Rupture ⛓️💥 Like last week’s post relating to fractures, there are tendon tears and there are tendon TEARS. Tendons connect muscle 💪🏽 to bone 🦴. Ligaments connect bone 🦴 to bone 🦴.Tendon tears in line with the fibers of the tendon (#LongitudinalTears) can happen as the result of acute injuries (#TendonStrain) or from chronic overuse. Tendon tears across the tendon fibers (#TransverseTears) can be either partial or complete (#Rupture). These can also be acute injuries or acute worsening of a chronic issue. These transverse tears disrupt a portion or all of the fibers connecting muscle to bone. A #Rupture occurs when 💯 % of the tendon is transversely torn, thereby completely disconnecting the muscle from the bone (a tendon TEAR). Repairing a rupture reconnects the tendon/muscle unit to the bone, restoring its function. If the rupture is in the middle of a tendon, this repair uses deep stitches (#Sutures) to reconnect the tendon ends. If the rupture is off of the bone, the tendon is repaired back to the bone with #Anchors that have #Sutures connected to allow the surgeon to sew the tendon to the bone. When a repair isn’t possible due to a lack of available tendon, #Reconstruction can be done to bring more tissue to the repair site, either tendon from somewhere else in the body (#Autograft), cadaver tendon (#Allograft), animal derived graft (#Xenograft), or synthetic tendon. This is the case if a 63 year-old gentleman with a few weeks of lateral ankle pain who felt a pop while unloading his truck 🛻. He has a history of an ACL reconstruction from a few decades ago, and one of the tendons on his lateral ankle was harvested and used to reconstruct his ACL (#Autograft). It was discovered on MRI and confirmed during surgery that his peroneus brevis was previously harvested. His peroneus longus was ruptured. This could be seen on X-Ray 🩻 with the migration of his #OsPeroneum proximally. To reconstruct this, his peroneus longus was transferred to the normal insertion of his peroneus brevis at the 5th metatarsal base with an OSSIO #anchor This was reinforced with a #Synthetic tendon using CONMED Orthopedics #BioBrace (in color🎨). This was all repaired together with an #EasyWhip #Suture from Winter Innovations, that really tied the room together. (😫 I couldn’t use CCR for the music 🎶 as it’s a protected song, IYKYK 😏). Dr. Brian Benson, DPM, M.S., MPH, AACFAS, DABPM is back with another successful EasyWhip® case! He completed an FHL tendon transfer alongside an Achilles tendon repair utilizing CONMED Advanced Surgical's BioBrace. Dr. Benson employed the notorious WhipLock™ stitch that offers enhanced security and minimizes tissue damage by evenly distributing the suture load (Diaz et al. 2024). Further congratulations are in order as this was the first case in the country where the BioBrace strips were used to recreate the same pattern that has traditionally only been used with suture tape. Well done, Dr. Benson! 👏🏻 Ready to try EasyWhip® in your next case? Visit https://lnkd.in/gczvFG8 to request your demo kit today!
