Voice of the North American Electric Transmission Industry
About us
WIRES is a non-profit working group and the voice of electric transmission owners, investors, and customers in the North American energy market. To meet the electricity demands of the 21st Century reliably and in an economically efficient and environmentally responsible way, WIRES actively promotes a legal and public policy climate-- at the state, federal, and international levels that facilitates a robust high-voltage transmission network. WIRES will focus investors, policymakers, and the public on the benefits that transmission solutions hold for the economy, the national security, and the energy-consuming public. Our Vision WIRES envisions a robust and effective Twenty-first Century, High-voltage Electric Transmission System in North America that will make critical contributions to economic growth, technological advancement, and consumer benefits. Our Mission WIRES, a non-profit trade association with an international membership, promotes investment in the North American electric transmission system, robust and effective transmission solutions to economic, environmental, and reliability challenges, and the reduction or elimination of uneconomic barriers to transmission development. This mission is accomplished through the development and dissemination of information, strategic advocacy, and innovation in regulatory, policy making, industry, and educational forums. ICYMI - Once again NPR turned to our Executive Director, Larry Gasteiger, to help listeners decipher complex - but critically important - transmission policy issues, this time on the podcast The Indicator from Planet Money. The discussion focused on transmission competition and some of its limitations in advancing the build out of the grid. Darian Woods: "The list of arguments against competition is long … Larry Gasteiger points to opposing studies showing cost increases from competition, less reliability, delays to development. Timing is a concern with just 26 years to build an insane amount of transmission.” Even Jon Wellinghoff points out that Order 1000 “didn’t turn out the way we expected." Larry recommends "We should stick with what is tried and true, and get transmission built … and meet the needs that we have today rather than try to experiment with new processes that don’t seem to be working." We're still reflecting on the many takeaways that North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC)'s Jim Robb offered in his keynote at our Summer Meeting. "As we electrify more and more aspects of our lives, our tolerance for outages is going to go to zero.... Most [new] generation that's going to come on the grid is going to largely be wind and solar. Peculiarity of that resource is that you can't move the fuel, you gotta move the power. Our ability to invest in transmission both for reliability purposes to build resilience, the interregional transfer capacity that I mentioned will become very very important, but also to enable new generation to come on to the grid and be able to find its way to load centers.... So the development and investment in infrastructure is going to be really really important.” (Time stamp 24:02) To listen to all of his Jim's insights, visit our event page to access the recording: https://lnkd.in/eBnjKPfs #transmission #gridreliability #NERC #gridofthefuture #gridexpansion #gridmodernization #gridsecurity #extremeweather #gridresilience

Our Executive Director, Larry Gasteiger, discussed the adverse impacts of competitive processes on needed transmission development on a recent NPR podcast The Indicator from Planet Money. Timing is a concern with just 26 years to build an insane amount of transmission.” Even Jon Wellinghoff points out that Order 1000 “didn’t turn out the way we expected." Check out this exciting grid news from WIRES member Eversource Energy!
⚡ Exciting clean energy news: Power Up New England was just selected by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for federal funding under the Grid Innovation Program! Our Huntsbrook Offshore Wind Hub—one of the projects in the Power Up New England portfolio—will establish a new location in southeastern Connecticut for an offshore wind project to safely and reliably connect to the electric grid. We appreciate the DOE’s approval of this critical energy proposal with this award and look forward to our continued collaboration with the CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, MA Department of Energy Resources, and many other valued partners as we work to advance a clean and equitable energy economy.
