The Auckland-based members of Women in Space Aotearoa New Zealand really enjoyed meeting Charity Weeden, Associate Administrator for Technology, Policy, and Strategy at NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration when she was in New Zealand recently. It was wonderful to hear Charity speak so passionately about her career path, NASA's return to the moon, her biggest challenges, and her impressions of New Zealand's space sector. Our conversations ranged from #sustainable lunar exploration all the way to human cyborgs! It was wonderful to have such a good turn-out and we look forward to catching up with more of our members across the country tonight at our #WorldSpaceWeek events! #womeninspace #womeninSTEM

🛰️ MethaneSAT: New Zealand Research 🛰️ “MethaneSAT is New Zealand’s first official government-funded satellite mission. The core mission of this unique satellite is to support reductions in methane emissions around the world.” - NIWA 🐄 Agriculture Scientists at NIWA are leading the multi-institution, multi-disciplinary team working on the agricultural #emissions science programme. This programme will involve developing and testing the potential for MethaneSAT to be used to detect methane emissions from agriculture. #NewZealand is an ideal location for such a science programme. Methane accounts for almost half our gross emissions budget, and 85% of that methane comes from agriculture. 👩🔬 Expertise Our world class scientists have both the knowledge and skills to lead this research! NIWA is joined by other institutions that bring unique expertise to the programme. 🛰 MethaneSAT: Engineer in Focus 🛰 Thank you Mahima Seth for taking the time to share with us such wonderful insights about working on the MethaneSAT mission! Mahima is an operations engineer on the MethaneSAT team at Te Pūnaha Ātea - Space Institute. 🌏 Operations Engineer “As an operations engineer at Te Pūnaha Ātea Auckland Space Institute, it will be my job to look after MethaneSAT for the remainder of the mission. This will include commanding and controlling MethaneSAT in orbit, contributing to all work that needs to happen on the ground to ensure successful operations, and much more. It is a bit of a stretch, but the idea of commanding a satellite that is in orbit makes me feel like a “ground astronaut”! It is a privilege to be given the opportunity to take part in MethaneSAT operations at such a pivotal point in my career.” 🇳🇿 MethaneSAT and New Zealand “For New Zealand, MethaneSAT signifies our commitment to contributing to global scientific advancement and combating #climatechange. MethaneSAT also presents some unique opportunities to showcase our capabilities to the world and to the people of New Zealand.” 🚀 Rocket Science “Part of my role is to inspire more people to join the space sector. I love challenging myself to create those “aha! I relate to that” moments for everyone that I meet and work with. I think those moments go a long way in breaking down notions that science especially space science is too hard. Yes, it is rocket science, but with the right ‘Guidance, Navigation and (some) Control’ we can understand it.” 🌟 Fun Fact! MethaneSAT is approximately the size of a household washing machine! The #WorldSpaceWeek 2024 theme is #SpaceandClimateChange. Here's how New Zealand is using space technologies to combat #climatechange: 🛰️ MethaneSAT: About 🛰️ New Zealand is a partner of the MethaneSAT mission, the goal of which is to measure and detect #methane #emissions from agriculture and oil and gas infrastructure. The satellite ‘reads’ reflected sunlight using a spectrometer to learn how that sunlight has been changed by methane. This can be compared to readings of sunlight that is yet to pass through Earth’s atmosphere to tell us how much methane is in the atmosphere. MethaneSAT will measure and map methane at high resolution within 200km x 200km target areas, allowing scientists to identify the sources of methane emissions. Methane is a powerful #greenhousegas that contributes significantly to #globalwarming. It accounts for approximately 43% of New Zealand’s emissions, so reducing methane emissions will have a significant and immediate impact on slowing #climatechange. The satellite’s mission control will be permanently hosted by The University of Auckland's Te Pūnaha Ātea - Space Institute. Photo: Te Pūnaha Ātea - Space Institute Text/design: Rosie C.
