We're thrilled to be working with our friends SmartSat CRC on this collaborative research approach. It's a great opportunity to advance space science, technology and cooperation between our two countries.
The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment and Australia’s SmartSat CRC are jointly calling for research proposals for feasibility studies in the field of Earth observation. These projects aim to help unlock information about the environment and climate through the observation of the Earth from high-altitude and space. MBIE and SmartSat CRC will co-fund four joint feasibility studies. New Zealand research teams can apply for up to NZ$100,000 (excluding GST) and applicants' Australian counterparts can apply for matched funding via SmartSat CRC. “I have been greatly enjoying my time so far at Ames! “I have loved being able to contribute to missions I had only been able to admire from afar until now. I have had the chance to tour a range of the Ames facilities, from the world's largest wind tunnel to the meteor simulating vertical gun facility and meet a number of experts across a range of fields. “The skills and tools I have worked on here are directly in line with my PhD work, and I am excited to bring this knowledge home to continue my study.” - Faun Watson, 2024 NZ Space Scholarship recipient, Victoria University of Wellington student and current intern at NASA Ames Research Center Stay posted for more updates from our 2024 New Zealand Space Scholarship recipients. 📣 Four space research projects will bring New Zealand and Australian researchers together to tackle trans-Tasman challenges. The joint projects have been agreed as part of our collaboration with Australia’s SmartSat CRC. Each research team has funding for 6-month feasibility studies in the areas of on Earth observation, space situational awareness or optical communications. The New Zealand research teams are led by: 📡 The University of Auckland, working with University of South Australia to look at practical solutions to transmitting large volumes of data between Earth and space with an international network of free space optical communication ground stations. 🛰 Te Pūnaha Ātea - Space Institute, working with Curtin University to support the development of SatPing and ultimately helping to enhance the responsible use of space 🌊 Delwyn Moller of ReSTORe Lab, working with SmartSat CRC to investigate the feasibility of a collaborative mission to improve high resolution ocean monitoring from space. Having this sort of data could improve both countries’ maritime domain awareness and ability to respond to natural disasters. 🐄 Sara Mikaloff-Fletcher of National Institute of Water & Atmospheric Research, working on a project to expand the group of scientists collaborating on the agricultural methane emissions research that is part of the MethaneSAT mission. Find out more about these collaborative studies: https://lnkd.in/dgiZnFC3 We’re also calling for proposals for four more Earth observation feasibility studies. “I've really liked meeting different people working on all different aspects of public outreach at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory ... I enjoy getting insight into how JPL and NASA explain what they do in a way that is engaging and inspiring for a wide audience. "It's also been amazing to hear from various JPL scientists and engineers and get a sense of being in "the room where it happens". You really get a sense of JPL's amazing history and the role it plays in space exploration.” – Grace Jacobs Corban, science communicator & 2024 NZ Space Scholarship recipient. This weekend marks the 55th anniversary of the first person walking on the moon (21 July NZ time). Most people will be familiar with this historic moment and the crew aboard Apollo 11 - Neil Armstrong, Edwin ‘Buzz’ Aldrin, and Michael Collins. Here’s a lesser-known fun fact: there’s also a Kiwi connection to this milestone – not only were the crew accompanied by a small New Zealand flag, we also sent a message of goodwill, which, along with messages from other countries, is etched on a small silicone disk left on the moon. We also have small samples of moon rock from the mission, and that small flag, here in Aotearoa New Zealand. New Zealand Space Scholarship recipients Alexandra McKendry (front right) and Faun Watson (back left) were on hand to greet the Prime Minister during his recent visit to NASA Ames Research Center. The Kiwi PhD students are completing internships at the NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration centre, where they’re working alongside NASA scientists to gain experience while contributing to NASA missions. Outside of the Space Scholarship programme, New Zealand research teams are also collaborating with NASA Earth Science researchers on a series of 6-month feasibility studies. Four of these projects are with NASA Ames Research Center and use Earth observations to focus on unlocking information about the forestry, wildland fires, coastal conditions, Earth systems and indigenous knowledge. We look forward to deepening our relationship with NASA alongside New Zealand businesses and researchers.
