    Building the climate workforce

“There’s such a big value in gathering a community together around solving a specific problem. Much more impact oriented than gathering for the sake of gathering.” Our initiative to fix the climate STEM talent pipeline just hit a huge milestone that I'm really proud of 💚 It proves that Work on Climate approach to workforce systems change is viable, and it gives me goosebumps that it actually worked. So, what did we do and how'd it go? A big bottleneck to climate tech innovation is shortage and lack of diversity in STEM talent - but the STEM talent pipeline is highly complex, no organization can fix it single-handedly. Last year we gathered a large group of powerful organizations all across the STEM talent pipeline in NY/NJ: educators at all levels, government agencies, professional associations, funders, and so on. We've been leading this group over the past 12+ months to conduct necessary research and identify specific bottlenecks in the pipeline, to prepare for building solutions to the bottlenecks. And... 🥁🥁🥁 at Climate Week NYC we got 9 of the organizations to commit to prototyping specific solutions to these talent bottlenecks!! (triple over the goal we set) What does this mean? - For the participating organizations: They are now drastically more ready for what the green economy will need from them. They are at the forefront of the change that all of their peers will need to embrace. - For us and for our funders: Our approach (assembling and leading a group of organizations across the "supply chain" of a specific climate workforce issue) is likely to work, and in the coming months we'll get even more signal. We should be doing more of this. - For climate action in the US: The first systemic effort to fix the climate STEM talent pipeline in the US is, so far, on track to succeed and be replicable. This gives hope, but also means it's time that others start replicating this work - it can't be just us. See blog link in comments!

    Building the climate workforce

Hot take: if you're looking for a job in sustainability, stop looking for roles with "sustainability" in the title => Look for functional roles at places where you can have climate impact in the role. There's *way* too few of them; unless you're a sustainability unicorn (in which case you probably don't need my advice), you probably won't get it. And that's not a bad thing. At companies that are actually serious about sustainability, almost all the work is done by functional teams (finance, product, supply chain etc), not by sustainability teams. Just like, at most companies, you don't expect software engineers to be the only ones (or the majority) doing work with a computer. I know companies with X00,000 employees that are known for being generally ahead of the game on sustainability, but they have 15-300 person sustainability teams (0.1-0.01% of their workforce), and you're lucky if they have 1-2 job openings on them. That's not because they're not doing anything. That's because almost everything they are doing has been integrated into functional teams. The role of sustainability teams is coordination and reporting, not implementation. So what should you do? I think you should ask yourself "how do I find a company where I will be able to drive climate impact in my functional role" and find a job there. Look at whether they have lines of business building climate solutions, look at their sustainability reports, look at whether they ask for any green skills in their job postings for this functional role, talk to the hiring manager about what kind of sustainability work people in this role actually tend to do at the company. And if they're not there yet (many companies aren't), then assess how likely it is that you'll be able to drive bottom-up change - how open are they in practice to bottom-up initiatives in general? Is their business model one where you *could* propose tangible changes towards sustainability that would be aligned with it? (no company is going to let you do something that doesn't make business sense) In this case, you'll also need political skills to get buy-in for the changes you're proposing - but the leverage is also higher. P.S. Stay tuned for our coming-soon report on the workforce structure and dynamics during a company's path to sustainability!
