Worksystems is the Local Workforce Development Board (LWDB), serving Multnomah and Washington Counties. We are here to provide you with the layoff services that all impacted workers are entitled to. These services include valuable information and resources from representatives from the Oregon Employment Department on applying for unemployment insurance, the Oregon Health Insurance Marketplace on choosing health insurance options, WorkSource Portland Metro on employment and training services available through the public workforce system, and more. Our aim is to connect you with the support and services you need to swiftly transition into quality jobs. Congratulations to the latest graduating cohort (the 22nd!) of the Quick Start to Semiconductor program. This innovative initiative -- a partnership between Worksystems, Intel Corporation, Washington County, the City of Hillsboro, and Portland Community College -- was created to address the shortage of workers in the semiconductor fabrication industry. Semiconductors are one of the pillars of the Portland Metro economy, and the industry is expected to grow by 33% by 2030. Participants undergo an intensive, 10-day training program, after which they are qualified to apply for positions as entry-level semiconductor fabricators. Since it was launched in 2022, 299 trainees (94%) have successfully completed the program. Of the 239 graduates who have interviewed with Intel, 71% were hired and another 11 have found positions with other regional semiconductor companies. DEI initiatives are an essential component of creating more inclusive, welcoming workplaces and removing barriers to advancement faced by historically disadvantaged communities. Lately, however, workplace DEI initiatives have faced a backlash. This backlash, its implications, and how to deal with it were the subject of a presentation by Worksystems' HR & JEDI Manager, Cynthia C., at the recent Oregon Employment & Training Association conference. The Interstate 5 Bridge provides a critical connection between the states of Washington and Oregon that supports local jobs and families and is a vital trade route for regional, national and international economies. A program like West Side Works -- a partnership between Worksystems, Washington County, the City of Beaverton, and Portland Community College, and funded by #ARPA -- not only creates a training pipeline to address the critical shortage of qualified early childhood workers, it helps build capacity in a segment of the educational system that has an enormous impact on young peoples' future health, educational attainment, and professional success. #PDXSaintsLove opened a new day shelter on March 21 in the Montavilla neighborhood of East Portland, which will be operated by #ShelterPortland. Worksystems is proud to support this endeavor, which addresses a foundational truth not just of workforce development, but the broader effort to lift up communities in our region: Human dignity matters. The new day shelter will offer the kinds of basic services that make so many other things -- like finding work -- possible: Hot meals. Showers. Haircuts. Referrals to shelter and detox services. Assistance with obtaining IDs, and with navigating housing and healthcare services. And much more. Our Business Services Manager, Kelly Haines, took part in an IBR equity roundtable on the I-5 Bridge Replacement Project with Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in Vancouver this week! Worksystems is proud to be a part of this project alongside Workforce Southwest Washington and Clackamas Workforce Partnership, and especially alongside the Portland Metro workforce!
