Rachel Laibson, Chief Development and Communications Officer, and Rebecca Solheim, Director of Donor Engagement, had a great time attending an art exhibition at Fana’s flagship boutique in Soho! Poonam and Bobby Jain, owners of Fana, learned about WSCAH from their son, who attended a volunteer event with Trinity School. Fana will be launching a ‘Be Kind’ campaign later this year, with a portion of all sales of the limited edition Be Kind bangle benefiting WSCAH. We are grateful for the support of our community and the creation of a fruitful new partnership!

A big thank you to WSCAH Board Member James Melchiorre for volunteering with our partner, Northern Manhattan Improvement Corporation (NMIC)! NMIC serves Northern Manhattan and the South and West Bronx with essential crisis services, and WSCAH is proud to support their work by providing healthy groceries to their clients. Board member involvement, like Jim’s, is key to deepening our impact in the community. We're grateful to everyone in the community, working to make sure all our friends, family and neighbors have the healthy food and supportive services they need and deserve.

Last month, WSCAH hosted a successful September family volunteer packing event, led by our wonderful staff. With only nine morning volunteers, we packed over 400 bags of grains and protein— with standout teamwork from two nine-year-olds who created their own efficient system! In the afternoon, WSCAH CEO, Greg Silverman and the team packed food and drew gratitude cards for hundreds of customers with help of 30 volunteers including his daughter Suraya and colleague Yoel Peralta’s daughter, Naomi. Looking forward to more fun family days in November!

WSCAH CEO Gregory Silverman spent a wonderful fall day at Princeton University with over 100 Princeton School of Public and International Affairs public policy students. It was great to speak about the evolution of WSCAH over the decades and how that evolution is transforming the fight against hunger in New York City and beyond. While our direct service work is innovative, the big discussion must always land on policy, policy, policy! A big thanks to the students who asked so many insightful and impactful questions.

WSCAH Benefits Access Specialist, Erica De Jesus, made headlines in a national interview with NPR Marketplace Business News, shining a spotlight on the barriers older adults face when accessing SNAP benefits. She discussed the overwhelming paperwork, complex applications, and the stigma that often keeps many from applying — with only 30% of eligible seniors currently enrolled. Erica emphasized that "meeting people where they are," in familiar spaces like senior centers and doctors’ offices, is essential to helping seniors navigate the system. As federal benefits continue to stagnate for our seniors we can and must do better to support this vital part of our ever-growing community. Listen or read the article now: https://lnkd.in/et-Nte24
