About us
We are an international nonprofit organization established in 1971, based in Portland, Oregon, with staff located in 16 different states. We work at the forefront of invertebrate protection worldwide, harnessing the knowledge of scientists and the enthusiasm of citizens to implement conservation programs. We take action by protecting endangered species and their habitat, training thousands of farmers and land managers to better protect and manage habitat, producing ground-breaking publications on insect conservation, and raising public awareness about the invertebrates of forests, prairies, deserts, creeks, wetlands, and oceans. Our methods focus on scientific analysis, applied research, advocacy, and education to defend invertebrates such as bees, butterflies, mollusks, and dragonflies.

Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation reposted this
Did you know... there is no state agency with the authority to list terrestrial invertebrates as threatened or endangered in Pennsylvania? And that means, there is no state agency that can coordinate with the USFWS on their recovery, and we can not take advantage of federal recovery funds without designating an agency home for these species. House Bill 2471 would amend the Wild Resource Conservation Act of 1982 and give the Department of Conservation of Natural Resources (DCNR) authority over terrestrial insects. If this bill passes, we'll have an agency that can: - take the lead on federal ESA coordination, including receiving and investing federal funds in recovery efforts - speak up for insect conservation in-state when we are discussing highway management and light pollution - protect native pollinators and secure our future food supply Thanks to David Hess for all the important environmental reporting, to Nate Reagle for his dedication to building invertebrate conservation in Pennsylvania, and to Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation for standing by us as we work to resolve this critical gap in state policy.
