Please join us for the third conversation in a 4-part series covering issues that impact low-wage workers. Black women today and for generations have worked hard to provide for their families and communities. While Black women lead all women in workforce participation, they find themselves most likely to be poor in the US and trapped in low-wage work. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Join us for The Untapped Economic Potential of Black Women, a virtual conversation, that will bring together a panel of researchers, entrepreneurs, economic development, and financial experts to discuss the solutions urgently needed to create an equitable, inclusive, and dynamic economy to benefit all Americans.

In a 2022 study conducted by McKinsey on Black representation within the beauty industry, it was discovered that in the $60 billion US beauty industry, Black brands only capture 2.5%. At first glance that might sound like a large percentage. However Black shoppers are responsible for 11.1% of total spending. McKinsey shares, addressing that gap is a $2.6 Billion opportunity. But how should we do it? Well, one solution is to build our own. This is why we are building the first commercial beauty makerspace to help BIPOC brands access manufacturing solutions to help them make amazing products and capture more market share. Hi, my name is Rahama and two years ago I was standing in front of this building with a vision to build a beauty makerspace. After spending almost two decades building my own brand I encountered challenge after challenge, especially with manufacturing. The fact is that manufacturing is not designed for small businesses. There are high minimum quantity requirements and it’s hard to find facilities that value small businesses. So I set out to create a space designed for small businesses like mine. A space that will prioritize our needs and create a community that uplifts and supports. Is my idea too ambitious? If you are a beauty brand and can identify with our goals join us! This is just the beginning of something great. #smallbusiness #womeninbusiness #washingtondc #enreprenuer #womanownedbusiness #beautyindustry #manufacting #smallbusiness #beautybusiness

According to a 2022 McKinsey report the US beauty industry in 2021 was valued at $60B. In 2025 that number is expected to grow to $73B. But not all brands are benefiting from this lucrative market. In that same report McKinsey states that addressing inequality in the beauty industry is a $2.6B opportunity. That's why we are building the first commercial beauty makerspace to help BIPOC brands access manufacturing solutions to help them make amazing products and capture more market share. By working together, we have the power to make big changes within the beauty industry. How can we create more community in the beauty industry?
