From Ezra Klein's mouth to your ears: The growth of the YIMBY movement has been "remarkable" People are asking what they can do to slow our rising housing prices. We are offering the opportunity to support the answer: let's choose abundance and end the housing shortage.

Major #YIMBYWin from our Orlando YIMBY chapter 🚨 Our volunteers have advocated for over a year in support of an affordable apartment proposal on land donated by Disney. The Orange County Board of County Commissioners has finally approved the project! 1,400 units of mixed income housing will be coming Central Florida, more than 1,000 of which will be reserved as affordable. The voices of advocates are helping us create a future where everyone has access to a home that they can afford. This is why the YIMBY movement is so important. https://lnkd.in/ehAWRdhZ

Can we build our way out of the housing crisis - YES WE CAN! 🔥🔥🔥 An affordability crisis is raising rents and making home ownership impossible. Even presidential candidates are taking notice. Sonja Trauss is a key voice with YIMBY Action and YIMBY Law, and says the solution is pretty simple: Build more homes. Getting that done isn’t so easy. CNN talks with Trauss about the origins of the problem and potential solutions. Watch here: https://lnkd.in/eXYRKr4J

What can we do to to make homes in the D.C.-area more affordable? A few of our YIMBYs of NoVA chapter members have some thoughts 🧠 Building diverse kinds of housing and making it easier to build homes are key solutions to ensuring that we address our housing shortage. We've seen in studies and in several US cities that when we build more homes, we see benefits for housing prices. It's time for us to make changes that will improve our communities and take some of the financial pressure off of ourselves and our neighbors. Read the full opinion piece: https://lnkd.in/deVqWMbn

A little WSJ story as the latest highlight for YIMBY's moment in the sun "YIMBY Action now has dozens of chapters across the country, and other grassroots groups have sprouted up alongside them. A 2022 Brookings Institution report found more than 140 local groups calling for housing reform, and the biennial “Yimbytown” national conference drew hundreds of participants to Austin, Texas, earlier this year. The movement is a bipartisan one; in states such as Florida, Texas, Montana and Utah, Republican policymakers have touted housing reform as a deregulatory measure that is good for the economy." https://lnkd.in/eHQHx5u7

Did you know conventional parking minimums can increase the rent or mortgage of an apartment or house by $200-$500 per month? Policies that require parking spots when we are trying to build new homes are the norm now, but they don't have to be forever. Imagine what our communities looked like if we focused more on building homes for people instead of cars. We would see more encouragement of dense housing projects in walkable neighborhoods. We'd see folks be able to rely less on cars and more on other forms of transportation like buses and bikes. We'd see a factor that increases our rent suddenly be removed. If you're ready to see a change, sign our petition to support the People Over Parking Act. Learn more about the federal bill and sign the petition: https://lnkd.in/gjFvsHCb
