This past weekend, Y leadership attended the San Antonio African American Community Fund Gala, and we received the Vulcan Materials Company Grant Award for our work with the Boys and Young Men of Color initiative. Through these programs, we aim to eliminate socio-economic barriers to academic success, higher education, and career readiness for youth of color. We are so grateful! #BoysandYoungMenofColor #YouthDevelopment #RemovingBarriers #AcademicSuccess #GrantAwardee #CommunityFund #ForaBetterUs

About us
Who We Are: Everyone knows the Y as a place to camp, swim, or exercise, but we’re so much more. We’re working side-by-side with our neighbors to address critical community needs that help kids develop into smart, resilient adults, for people to improve their health and build a sense of community, and for our most vulnerable young people to get the care and support they need. Our Mission: To put Judeo-Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. For 148 years, we have been listening and responding to our community’s most critical social needs, ensuring that everyone has the chance to learn, grow and thrive, regardless of age, income, ability, ethnicity or faith. We focus on youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility, and incorporate core values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility, and faith into all we do.

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) Camp Project Power is back this week at our Westside Family YMCA, providing a no-cost healthy lifestyle and diabetes prevention program for youth ages 9-12. The week-long day camp educates at-risk youth and their families about diabetes, nutrition, obesity prevention, and physical activity and is offered at no cost to all participants. 💫 In 2024, diabetes became the seventh-leading cause of death in Texas and the fourth-leading cause in Bexar County. According to the City of San Antonio Metro Health District, over 13%, or 280,000 residents, in Bexar County have been diagnosed with diabetes. Type 2 diabetes, which is largely preventable, accounts for nearly 95% of all diabetes diagnoses in the United States. The Westside of San Antonio has one of the highest diabetes rates in the nation. “At the YMCA, we are committed to providing a space where families can participate in programs and activities geared toward our mission of building a stronger community. We are grateful to have partnered with the American Diabetes Association again to offer this camp and serve at-risk youth in our community," said Janice Sanchez, Operations Director of the Westside Family YMCA. 💪 Campers will enjoy a week filled with a blend of fun and educational activities. Highlights include programming from Earn-A-Bike, swimming and water safety classes, youth sports, a mental health series, craft sessions, and hands-on CPR training from the American Heart Association. Additionally, campers will learn about meal and snack portions, mindful eating, good sleeping habits, and how to read food labels. Parent education and involvement are crucial to preventing Type 2 diabetes in youth. To help families and youth keep a long-term focus on health, they will also receive a free 1-month YMCA family membership. #CampProjectPower #DiabetesPrevention #SanAntonio #AmericanDiabetesAssociation #Community #ForaBetterUs #YMCA #youthdevelopment #Type2Diabetes #obesity
