A recent article from The Chronicle of Evidence-Based Mentoring references an insightful piece from The Wall Street Journal highlighting how young American men are increasingly disengaged from education, employment, and personal connections. The article emphasizes that mentorship programs, like Youth Guidance's Becoming a Man (BAM), are crucial for addressing these challenges, providing boys with the guidance and support they need to succeed. 👉 Read more: https://lnkd.in/gqyPgDyW 👉 WSJ story: America's Young Men Are Falling Even Further Behind: https://lnkd.in/gTQQFY2j (requires subscription) #MentorshipMatters #BoysLeadership #YouthEmpowerment

Guiding kids to bright futures!
About us
Youth Guidance creates and implements school-based programs that enable at-risk children to overcome obstacles, focus on their education and, ultimately, to succeed in school and in life. We believe that success is realized as students stay on track to graduate elementary and high school, develop the skills and abilities needed to make positive choices in their lives, and develop resilience assets such as self-efficacy, anger management, and positive values so that they may live successful, self-sufficient lives as adults. Our specific and strategically developed delivery areas are: Counseling & Prevention (BAM, WOW, STRIVE) Community & After-School (Parent/Family Engagement, Full-Service Community Schools Community Learning Centers and Extended Day & Enrichment Programs), and Career Readiness & Success. Youth Guidance directly serves more than 14,000 youth while touching the lives of many parents, teachers and community members. More than 95% of youth served are African American and Hispanic/Latino. Youth Guidance is accredited by the Council on Accreditation (COA). To learn more, please visit our website at www.youth-guidance.org.

Currently there is a public health crisis among black men. For example in 1978 black men reflected 3.1% of matriculants and 40 years later 2.9%. All in the context of widening healthcare disparities. These statistics are alarming and have large implications in access, research, and economic mobility. We know minorities are more likely to serve underserved populations and research chronic diseases specific to underrepresented communities-illnesses that impact our emergency departments at large volumes often patients without adequate coverage and economic means. That is why I’m elated to join the advisory council of two very impressive organizations seeking to improve the public health crisis of Black men in Medicine: Youth Guidance Becoming A Man (BAM) and Sneakers to Scrubs . BAM program engages young men in navigating difficult circumstances by openly expressing themselves, receiving support and developing the social and emotional skills necessary to succeed. These tools are necessary for every profession. Sneakers2Scrubs empower young student-athletes to leverage their passion for sports into extraordinary educational and career pathways. As a former student athlete this speaks dearly to me the ability to apply discipline and goal setting learned from athletics and apply to personal development-mentally, emotionally, and academically. Thank you Terrell Anderson UChicago Medicine Jameel A. And Rush University System for Health very own Lord Hyeamang your leadership. #blackmen #healthequity #socialdeterminantsofhealth

I learned from my friends at Youth Guidance, Dallas that being invited into a community is a privilege. Just because you're around a group of people doesn't automatically make you a part of their village. The ritual of being invited in is a special act. With that, I've concluded some speaking engagements that involved being invited to address the good people of After-School All-Stars, Los Angeles, the Maine Afterschool Network, and most recently, the Kansas Enrichment Network. It was inspiring to hear the personal stories and experiences from dedicated youth development professionals in your programs! All of us here at Mizzen Education are grateful for all that you do for youth, families, and communities! Thank you Hector LaFarga, Jr., Elena Coral Arias, Erin Frati, and Michael Lemon for allowing me into your community to share my own learnings and experiences around relationship-building, identity development, and storytelling as important human-centered skills that equip staff and youth alike to experience a fulfilled and fantastic future! #community #storytelling #identity #Afterschool #youthdevelopment #relationships #keynote

Romanucci & Blandin continued its legacy of transformative justice and hosted the inaugural Your Bridge to Justice panel event at River Roast yesterday, bringing together experts from law, medicine, mental health, legislative and elected officials, journalism, and advocacy. Attendees discussed the current interplay between race/socio-economics in policing and healthcare systems. Our two panels, moderated by Antonio Romanucci and Stephan Blandin, discussed the implications of these issues for communities in Chicago, Illinois, and the rest of the country. Thank you to Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul, Washington Post criminal justice reporter Robert Klemko, social worker and advocate Anjanette Young, Dr. Enrico Benedetti of UI Health, Dr. Ngozi Ezike of Sinai Chicago and Nacole Milbrook, Psy.D. of Youth Guidance for lending their expertise and knowledge to our panels, alongside R&B Partners Bhavani Raveendran and Michael Holden.

🌍✨ Today, we celebrate the strength, courage, and limitless potential of girls worldwide on International Day of the Girl! At Youth Guidance, our Working on Womanhood (WOW) program is proof of what’s possible when we invest in young women. WOW creates a safe space for girls to build resilience, process emotions, and develop life skills through trauma-informed counseling and social-emotional learning. ✨ The impact is real: Girls in WOW experience a 22% improvement in mental health and a 14% decrease in depression, according to the University of Chicago. These numbers reflect powerful transformations, as girls step into their strength, shaping brighter futures for themselves and their communities. 💪 On this day, let’s recommit to gender equity and continue empowering young girls to dream, grow, and lead! #InternationalDayoftheGirl #WOW #YouthGuidance #EmpowerGirls #GenderEquity #StrengthInSisterhood

A big thank you to Romanucci & Blandin, LLC for inviting our very own Nacole Milbrook, Psy.D. (sporting a pink blazer in the photos below) to speak at the inaugural "Your Bridge to Justice" panel event. Nacole shared powerful insights into the racial disparities in youth mental healthcare and how Youth Guidance is addressing these challenges head-on. Nacole highlighted the barriers youth of color face in accessing treatment, and how our school-based, culturally responsive programs like BAM (Becoming a Man) and WOW (Working on Womanhood) are breaking down those barriers by meeting youth where they are — in their schools — and providing no-cost, evidence-based services. Rigorous evaluation by the University of Chicago validates the impact: ▪ WOW students saw a 38% reduction in trauma-related distress and a 22% reduction in PTSD symptoms ▪ BAM students are 50% less likely to be arrested for violent crime and 19% more likely to graduate high school ▪ For every $1 invested in BAM, there’s a $30 societal gain Nacole’s message was clear: sustainable funding is essential to continue providing these life-changing programs to youth in need. Thank you again to Romanucci & Blandin for the opportunity to share our work and for helping elevate the conversation on equity in healthcare. Happy World Mental Health Day from Youth Guidance!🌍💚 At Youth Guidance, we recognize that mental health is at the core of strong families and thriving communities. Just as we seek medical care for a broken leg or visit the eye doctor when our vision needs support, sometimes it’s our minds and hearts that require healing. That’s where Youth Guidance steps in, bridging the gap between mental health care and the needs of our most vulnerable communities. Through our BAM (Becoming A Man) and WOW (Working On Womanhood) programs, we provide life-changing mentorship and counseling to young people, equipping them with the emotional tools to face challenges, build resilience, and succeed in school and beyond. Our programs foster emotional well-being and help youth develop skills to navigate life's difficulties with confidence and strength. We are incredibly grateful for our dedicated counselors who provide essential care to students and families and for our amazing partners who make this work possible. As we celebrate World Mental Health Day, we encourage you to prioritize your own mental well-being—because when we care for ourselves, we build stronger, healthier communities together. 💪🏽💛 #WorldMentalHealthDay #YouthGuidance #BAM #WOW #MentalHealthMatters #CommunityCare #StrongerTogether
