On a mission to eliminate racism, empower women, stand up for social justice, help families, and strengthen communities
About us
YWCA USA is on a mission to eliminate racism, empower women, stand up for social justice, help families, and strengthen communities. We are one of the oldest and largest women’s organizations in the nation, serving over 2 million women, girls, and their families. YWCA has been at the forefront of the most pressing social movements for more than 160 years — from voting rights to civil rights, from affordable housing to pay equity, from violence prevention to health care reform. Today, we combine programming and advocacy in order to generate institutional change in three key areas: racial justice and civil rights, empowerment and economic advancement of women and girls, and health and safety of women and girls.. YWCA honors the legacy of Texas Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee for her many years of resilient service and commitment to the advancement of all people. She was a champion for civil rights and a dedicated leader with nearly three decades of service. Her critical leadership of VAWA, through the House of Representatives, provided critical services to many survivors served by YWCAs across the country. Additionally, her work led to the commemoration of Juneteenth. As we commit to serving women and girls with our mission, we are reminded that empowered women, empower women. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee’s legacy will endure in our mission to #EliminateRacism and #EmpowerWomen.

Today, we mark a significant milestone in American history: the 60th anniversary of the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. #OTD President Lyndon B. Johnson signed this landmark legislation into law, outlawing discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, and national origin. As we reflect on this momentous occasion, we're reminded of the powerful words of Martin Luther King Jr., who wrote: "We must come to see that the end of racial injustice is not merely a matter of civil rights or human rights; it is a matter of human dignity," — The Rising Tide of Racial Consciousness. 🧡 Donate today to support dignity for all 👉bit.ly/4eNblOI and 📚 read MLKs full article 👉 bit.ly/3znpDoU

🚨 NEW: Landmark Advisory on Firearm Violence 🚨 U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy at U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has issued a historic Advisory declaring firearm violence in America as a public health crisis. This critical move acknowledges the devastating impact of gun violence on our communities. bit.ly/3VH9L84 Addressing firearm violence is crucial to reducing the epidemic of intimate partner violence. By recognizing this critical link, we can work together to create a safer, more equitable society for all. As one of the largest providers of safety and support services for survivors of intimate partner violence, YWCA knows firsthand the dangers that firearms pose for women, children, and families. As YWCA USA CEO Margaret Mitchell said, "We are grateful for the Surgeon General’s attention to this critical issue." Let’s amplify this crucial conversation and demand action to address the root causes of violence! Together, we can make a difference and pave the way for #SafetyForAll.
