Zaviant’s top weekly news roundup is back with the latest in #DataPrivacy and security. First, Illinois lawmakers amended the state’s Biometric Information Privacy Act to relax liability for companies collecting biometric data from customers without permission. Now, companies will only be liable for a single violation per person rather than for each instance data is collected. Next, the Department of Homeland Security says it is prototyping a ‘different’ way to protect data, dubbed "data autonomy". With this new method, officials say owners could place certain access controls on data, such as expiration dates for self-deletion. Finally, according to a survey by Arcserve, nearly half of all U.S. businesses have suffered significant revenue losses due to a data security incident, and 4 out of 5 businesses have been hit by ransomware.

📈 Globally, the average total cost of a data breach hit a record $4.88 million this year – a 10% increase from last year according to a new report from IBM. 🔒 The same report, however, also found that organizations that used #AI in their security measures saved an average of $2.2 million when a breach occurred. 💼 Additionally, more than half of breached organizations are facing security staffing shortages this year. Is your organization leveraging AI to augment staffing shortages or help reduce the risk of financial fallout from a data breach?

Zaviant’s top 3 weekly news roundup is back to keep you informed on the latest in #DataPrivacy and security. First up, a new law in Ohio will take effect this fall requiring schools with third-party contractors to retain the sole rights to their students’ records. More data privacy legislation continues to come online at the state level, with a dozen laws set to take effect in the next two years. Second, a #CyberAttack on a background check company exposed the personal data of nearly 3 billion people – one of the largest data breaches ever. Many victims may not realize their data was stolen. Finally, an annual study from Critical Start found that the vast majority of cybersecurity professionals (86%) are most concerned with unknown cyber risks, up 17% from last year. This could indicate a need for more proactive cyber risk management practices.
