The Alliance works with communities to influence policies and practices which enhance resilience to climate hazards.
About us
The Zurich Climate Resilience Alliance is a collaboration between humanitarian, NGO, research and private sector partners, working to build resilience to climate hazards in rural and urban contexts. Formerly the Zurich Flood Resilience Alliance, we have over a decade of experience in generating evidence of communities’ current levels of climate resilience and identifying appropriate solutions. Through long-term community programmes, new research and stakeholder influencing, we strive to deliver systemic change at scale and realize our vision of a world in which communities are more resilient to climate hazards, and able to thrive. The Alliance is powered by the Z Zurich Foundation.

Compound #heatwave and #flood events are escalating—driven by climate change and rapid urbanization. Occurring in quick succession or even simultaneously, these overlapping hazards can amplify impacts on health, infrastructure, ecosystems, and livelihoods, often surpassing the damage of individual events. A new paper by members of the Zurich Climate Resilience Alliance uses current scientific research and case studies to explore the drivers behind these compound events, their increasing frequency and implications. Tailored for practitioners, it offers actionable solutions with co-benefits for compound flood and heat wave events. Our 'Solutions' series shares practical and replicable local knowledge through our work across the world on how to build resilience to climate hazards. In collaboration with local government and provincial agencies in Vietnam, ISET Int have developed detailed evacuation maps and plans for response scenarios that correspond to the three existing early warning system flood alert levels. Double Jeopardy 🏆: What happens when a tropical cyclone 🌀 wipes out power 🕯️—only to be followed by a heatwave 🥵? The result: thousands left without access to cooling, escalating cases of heat illness, and compounding risks that strain communities and infrastructure. Our latest report explores the hidden dangers of compound heat and flood events and the adaptation strategies that can build resilience against multiple hazards. Key insights include: 🌍 Multi-hazard risk assessment for better planning and preparedness 🌿 Nature-based solutions to mitigate both urban flooding and extreme heat 🏙️ Climate-smart urban design, including permeable surfaces and passive cooling retrofits to address both hazards 🗣️ Community engagement and education—because informed action saves lives 📖 Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/e2DBQMjU Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre Zurich Climate Resilience Alliance Carolina Pereira Marghidan
Compound events, such as floods and heatwaves, can interact in a way that creates more severe outcomes than if they occurred both individually, as multiple stressors can exceed the coping capacity of a system more quickly than individual stressors occurring in isolation. On March 10th, 2025, we, Practical Action in Bangladesh, proudly observed National Disaster Preparedness Day in Faridpur district as part of our ongoing efforts to enhance community resilience under the Zurich Climate Resilience Programme. This day is a reminder of the importance of proactive disaster preparedness and response, focusing on building community resilience to better face challenges posed by any natural or man-made hazard. The District Relief and Rehabilitation Office, Faridpur, hosted a discussion session, opened by the Deputy Commissioner of Faridpur as the chief guest and chaired by the Additional Deputy Commissioner General. The event brought together key stakeholders, including the Additional Police Super (special guest), District Relief & Rehabilitation Officer, BFSCD, Red Crescent Society, NGOs, and volunteers. The session highlighted our efforts to enhance disaster preparedness through improved early warning systems, innovative technologies, risk assessment, capacity building, and advocacy for a national roadmap. Key initiatives include the Disaster Alert for BD app, local resilience agent pools, digital weather boards, and a voice messaging system for real-time multi-hazard alerts. Furthermore, in collaboration with the BFSCD, a rally was organized to raise public awareness about fire hazards. A heartfelt thanks to all participants and volunteers for their dedication to strengthening community resilience. Their active engagement underscores the power of collective action in disaster preparedness. Preparedness is the key to protecting communities from the impact of #climate hazards – but in the planning stage, the unique experiences of women and girls are often overlooked. Plan International’s Daniela Donia and Manuel von der Muehlen explain how the Zurich Climate Resilience Alliance’s work in the Philippines offers a more equitable and inclusive – and therefore more effective – approach to climate resilience 👇

When it comes to protecting communities from the impacts of climate hazards, preparedness is crucial. However, the experiences of women and girls are often overlooked during the planning stage, despite the fact that their experiences can contribute to building resilience against hazards. Ahead of International Women's Day, Plan International's Daniela Donia and Manuel von der Mühlen explain how the Zurich Climate Resilience Alliance's work in Manila and Navotas offers a more equitable and inclusive approach to climate resilience.
