NEW from Food Tank: California Bans ‘Sell By’ Dates to Simplify Labels and Cut Food Waste "The federal government is considering bills on date standards for food, but the U.S. remains without federal guidelines. A number of organizations, including Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and the Zero Food Waste Coalition, are calling on Congress to establish national standards by passing the Food Date Labeling Act, but it has not moved forward." 🚨 BREAKING 🚨 Founding ZFWC member, ReFED—with support from Global Methane Hub—just revealed the methane hotspots for uneaten food in the U.S., and highlights corresponding solutions that can reduce food waste and slash methane emissions. This first-of-its-kind data emphasizes how wasting less food is a critical lever to mitigate climate change because it is effectively a one-two punch—reducing methane both in the production of food as well as in its disposal. Congratulations to the ReFED and Global Methane Hub teams on this innovative learning tool! Learn more and find the report here ➡️ https://lnkd.in/ecGYG4qw #sdg12 #sustainability #climatesolutions

HUGE NEWS! California just became the first state to standardize date labels—starting July 1, 2026, manufacturers will be required to use the same phrases for date labels across their products: - “BEST if Used By” will be used to communicate peak quality, and - “Use By” will be used to communicate product safety. Assembly Bill 660 also prohibits the use of "sell by" dates, which are used to inform stock rotation in stores but frequently confuse consumers into thinking that food is no longer good after that date. ReFED's analysis shows that nearly 8% of uneaten food from households—more than three million tons—is due to date label concerns. Standardizing date labels is a low-lift solution that could yield big results. Congratulations to Californians Against Waste, Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), and everyone else who helped make this happen. Let's hope this victory drives change across the country! https://lnkd.in/gywPHn8u #foodwaste #sdg12 #sustainability #climatechange

Today is International Day of Awareness of Food Loss & Waste, and the American Biogas Council is excited to announce that we have been accepted for membership by the Zero Food Waste Coalition. Biogas systems capture the methane emissions from food waste and convert it into #RenewableEnergy. 3️⃣ quick facts you may not know about food waste and its effect on our climate: 🍌Food in landfills breaks down slowly and releases methane, a potent greenhouse gas with 86 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide over 20 years 🚮Last year, 235 million tons of U.S. food supply went unsold or uneaten 🌎Reducing methane emissions from food waste is one of the most effective ways to combat #ClimateChange in the short term #FoodWasteAwareness #FoodLossandWaste #BenefitsOfBiogas

🎉 A resolution has officially been introduced to recognize September 29th as the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste (IDAFLW) in the U.S.! 🎉 Learn more about the incredible campaign to get this resolution introduced, led by Too Good To Go, at the link below ⬇️ "The Zero Food Waste Coalition is honored to join Coalition member Too Good To Go in its campaign to urge Congress to federally recognize the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss Waste. When it comes to food loss and waste, we all have a role to play if we’re going to meet the national goal of reduction by 50% by 2030. Dedicating a day to highlight this work, and increasing food loss and waste prevention efforts alongside it, is a great stride toward progress," said the Zero Food Waste Coalition. https://lnkd.in/erezs46e

🎉 Today, a major milestone in the fight against food waste is celebrated! A resolution has officially been introduced to recognize September 29th as the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste (IDAFLW) in the US. 🇺🇸 Huge thanks to Representatives Mike Lawler, Representative Chellie Pingree, Lori Chavez-DeRemer, and @Brian Fitzpatrick for their bipartisan leadership in addressing this global challenge. Nearly 40% of all food produced worldwide is wasted yearly, amounting to over $1 trillion in lost resources, while millions remain food insecure. As a proud member of the Zero Food Waste Coalition, Too Good To Go is honored to support this resolution, aiming to cut food waste in half by 2030. This designation is a powerful reminder of the benefits of reducing food loss and waste: a healthier planet, stronger communities, and more food for those in need. Let’s inspire action and advocate for innovative solutions together! 🗞️ Full Press Release: https://lnkd.in/eZM4JR5W

🗣 This Just In: ZFWC Celebrates EPA’s Announcement of Funding Opportunities to Advance Recycling Infrastructure and Support Food Waste Prevention Education ♻️ The Zero Food Waste Coalition (ZFWC) is excited to see the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) dedicate $117 million in grants focused on recycling and wasted food prevention. The Recycling Education and Outreach Grant Program will provide $39 million to fund one cooperative agreement, which includes developing and implementing a national consumer wasted food reduction campaign (!!!), expanding the market for and sales of compost, and increasing education and outreach to households on composting. 🎉 Why We're Excited We have long called for a national consumer education and behavior change campaign, including in our US Food Loss and Waste Action Plan and in our Farm Bill report. Evidence indicates that a national education campaign has tremendous potential to impact consumer behavior, so we're glad to see EPA take this next step by offering funding for a national campaign! Understand California's SB 1383 through this insightful and practical Modern Farmer article featuring our COO, Katlyn Marchini. "Passed in 2016, SB 1383 is California legislation that reduces emissions by diverting organic waste from landfills. It included a component that requires food recovery from food generators of a certain size—restaurants that seat more than 250, grocery stores, hospitals, schools, and more." https://lnkd.in/dr_CwshT #california #sb1383
