During #WomensHistoryMonth, Christie Denmead, operations support manager for Cubic Defense, urges women to embrace their confidence and speak up. “Women often see things with a different lens and this adds value and diversity to the conversation. Trust the skills you bring and the experience you have – this in turn helps other women be seen and valued for their contributions.” And remember to be a supporter. As women are trying to find the balance in their lives, remember that offering a kind word, acknowledgement or a simple shout out can often make their day.

Talk to women working in security or defence about entrenched misogyny and you'll be shocked what they endure. And we're starting to see the true cost of this culture. In her very good article for Newlines, Luba Kassova breaks it down... → Female intelligence officers in Israel warning about Hamas attacks, which were ignored by male leaders. → Sexist abuse faced by Kimberly Cheatle, former Secret Service Director after the Trump assassination attempt → Historical dismissal of warnings by CIA analysts about Osama Bin Laden Here we are in 2024 and major security breaches are still being used to question the competency of women and argue against hiring them in these roles. Lives are being lost because of antiquated views. The future of security can not be dictated by prejudice. 👉 Read more in "The Lethal Price of Misogyny in Security and Defense" https://loom.ly/J8SsxsY h/t Amie Ferris-Rotman #GenderEquality #WomenInSecurity #Leadership #SecurityServices #DiversityMatters

When I was approached about supporting this Women's Defence Connection event during my trip to Land Forces, it provided a real opportunity for me to reflect on my career, and my hope to help remove the barriers and biases I experienced for those in the industry, ultimately helping to shape a more diverse workforce across defence. I think of my career in two distinct periods: my time in the military and my time out of the military. In the military I spent 21 years in the Australian Army, and the pride I feel to this day that I was able to serve my country is immense, I loved it. In my time outside of my military career, I’ve worked for a range of companies all with very different workplace environments, and achieved some of my best successes. Unfortunately one thing that was consistent across these experiences is that stereotypes persistently plague women in male-dominated workplaces. The assumption that women are less competent or less committed can hinder their progress and the culture within these industries can be isolating. Whilst I wasn't personally challenged by all of this, I've witnessed the effects a lack of inclusion can have on people's overall well-being and job satisfaction. In hindsight I can look back and see how some of these experiences helped shape me into the leader and teammate I am today, but wouldn't it have been better if we all had equal opportunities to excel, and be the best we can be? I became a CEO at 41 and achieved a lifetime goal of running a business, I’ve chaired Government committees, worked with charities, led large acquisition campaigns, and complex delivery of programmes, whilst raising two children and most recently being appointed as a NED to a FTSE250 company. I've certainly achieved a lot I'm extremely proud of, hitting my head on the unacknowledged glass ceiling many times (something I like to think now that I have finally broken through). When I reflect, I sometimes wonder what else I could have achieved if I'd started on a level-playing field and not spent time learning to use underestimation to my advantage, so I want to do my bit to ensure others don't face the same obstacles. There's a lot being done across the industry, including by organisations like the Women in Defence networks, initiatives by companies to remove unconscious biases, employee resource group's like BAE Systems' GEN network, STEM outreach and advocacy from senior-leaders across the board. Progress is being made, but there's still a long way to go. Women continue to face a gender-pay gap, albeit a reducing %, and be underrepresented in senior leadership positions. It's something we need to face together, regardless of gender we should all be challenging ourselves, what are YOU doing to support the women in your industry and those who will come tomorrow? As always, it was a privilege to be able to speak to such a fantastic audience. Congratulations to the organising team, including Ellie Hughes, an awesome job - well done!
