Examples Of Work
Essential Duties*
Diagnoses all mechanical and electrical defects, utilizing proper diagnostic tools.
Ability to comprehend all data steams presented on scan tools.
Ability to diagnose and repair minor and complex engine defects.
Performs tune-ups, oil changes, battery checks, tire and lubrication checks, and other preventive maintenance on all the city’s fleet.
Test drives vehicles and equipment.
Maintain detailed vehicle maintenance records, Assist Lower-level technicians in detailed maintenance record writing.
Have a comprehensive understanding automotive/equipment computer and wiring.
Ability to perform all heavy classified repairs, IE engine, transmission, differential R&R
Advanced knowledge of removal and repair of rear axle assemblies, gears or replacement.
Advance knowledge of large equipment to include diesel engine repair and maintenance.
Must provide own set of tools (full set).
May be subject to after hour calls.
Other Important Duties*
May perform some welding work and acetylene cutting.
May operate other city vehicles as well as equipment (pick-up and delivery).
May attend educational seminars; and maintain all levels of certifications obtained before and during employment.
Performs such other duties as may be assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Detailed knowledge of auto mechanics and the operation and repair of small and heavy equipment, And all fuel types Detailed knowledge of: all automotive repair (water pumps, alternators, power steering pumps, suspension hydraulic, air brakes etc.) ability to perform: Preventive Maintenance Inspections with zero oversight.
Physical Ability to:lift and maneuver up to 80 lbs. (i.e. battery, bucket, etc.) and ascend and descend 30” high steps numerous times per day.
Ability to: operate heavy equipment (pick-up and delivery); repair hydraulic systems, engines, and heavy equipment; read wiring diagrams; diagnose minor mechanical problems as well as repair vehicles; work with a variety of hand and power tools; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers and other departments' personnel; and maintain Texas driver's license (applicable to job responsibilities) and good driving record.
Acceptable Experience And Training
High school graduation, or its equivalent and at least 6 years of experience repair.
Plus certifications as advanced auto mechanic, advanced diesel mechanic and Heavy equipment mechanic.
or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Certificates And Licenses Required
State of Texas Class B (commercial) driver's license (obtainable within 6 months).
Desirable: Class A CDL Is preferred
Starting Pay: $23.68/hour
