Position Summary

The Medical assistant is part of a healthcare team assisting medical providers in rendering professional care to patients within an ambulatory/primary care setting.

Core Job Responsibilities

  • Take vital signs, perform phlebotomy and quality controls, administer medications/vaccines, monitor patient’s charts and assess patient needs through discussion with patient and /or family.
  • Respond to patient questions and provide health care information, ensure that needs of patients and their families are addressed, and health center policy is followed.
  • Review medical records for overdue labs and procedures and notify providers as necessary.
  • Contact appropriate entities (e.g. lab, imaging studies, consultation reports, hospital discharge summaries, Emergency Department reports, etc.) for medical data collection to help prepare for patient visits.
  • Assist provider with onsite procedures
  • Return patients phone calls; schedule patient appointments
  • Follow up with patients regarding lab results and schedule appointments with specialists
  • Ensure sufficient and appropriate supplies are available in exam rooms
  • Maintain open lines of communication with providers, front desk staff and other clinic employees and utilizes a team-based approach to coordinate patient care.
  • Complete the patient check-out procedure at the end of the visit, including any follow up needed. Ensure all patient concerns have been met prior to the patient’s departure.
  • Provide de-escalation; calm and/or defuse irate callers and patients by working with them to identify and properly address concerns
  • Secure patient information and maintain patient confidence by completing and safeguarding medical records; keeping patient information confidential
  • Assist at front desk as needed
  • Travel to other health centers for training and to provide coverage (as necessary)
  • Successful completion of Medical Assistant Competency program upon hire and annually thereafter (see attached Primary and Secondary Skills list)
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements/Preferences

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Medical Assistant diploma from an accredited program required
  • Certification or Registration preferred
  • A minimum of one (1) year experience preferred
  • CPR certification required
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word, etc.) required
  • Basic proficiency with EHR preferred, Epic a plus

Working Conditions/Equipment

  • Normal health center environment
  • Ability to stand for up to six (6) hours at a time
  • Ability to lift/carry up to 10 lbs
  • Ability to bend, stretch, lean and support in the context of assisting patients
  • Computer
  • Phone/Fax/Copier/Scanner
  • Medical office equipment such as Sphygmomanometer, sharps, specimen kits, scales, electrocardiogram, etc.
  • Medical office supplies such as vaccines/medications, nebulizers, bandages, glucometers, etc.

Depending on position applied/being recruited for , candidates may be required to be vaccinated against communicable diseases , and provide supporting documentation proving that they are properly vaccinated, or apply for religious and/or medical vaccination exemption as a part of the application process.
