Overview:

The summer internship program at URC is designed to develop highly motivated, engaged learners, and diverse emerging talent that impact international development. Internship opportunities are available with multiple teams at URC including Global Security and the Center for Technical Excellence. This is an exciting and unique opportunity to engage with URC colleagues and benefit from an engaging learning environment.

This is a remote, paid internship opportunity. Though remote, the intern may work from the Chevy Chase, MD office.

Learning Objectives and Outcomes:

  • Gain knowledge about the international development industry;
  • Gain practical experience in a professional workplace;
  • Build a network of professional connections;
  • Develop professional communication skills;
  • Anticipated Duration: 6 months (not to exceed 1,000 hours).


Division Overview:

The URC Office of Global Security oversees the protection of staff to identify risk and potential loss to the company. The Director of Global Security develops and implements security standards and ensures that they are followed by all company staff. This includes managing all security operations, conducting investigations, emergency preparedness, training staff and personnel, and leading contract guarding programs.

Responsibilities:

  • Assess program activities relative to their impact on staff safety and security and recommend appropriate communication, specific protocols and practices to reduce staff risk and vulnerability;
  • Assist with reviewing the Emergency Action Plans and Procedures;
  • Collect and summarize monthly reports or briefing memos for Chief of Party, HQ-based Project Leadership and URC Sr. Director of Global Security, outlining current security situation, anticipating incidents when feasible, and presenting any concerns;
  • Assist with identifying a viable intelligence platform that will assess project safety and risks and identify communication needs, to ensure availability or appropriate security mitigations;
  • Update the country security risk profile (with regards to the socio-economic, political and/or military situation in country, the country criminality profile, the nature of ongoing conflicts or crises, climatic & seismic hazards, and health risks);
  • Identify security training that is warranted (e.g., HEAT, training to drivers and guards, evacuation drills, fire safety etc.).


Qualifications:

  • A current student or recent graduate with a bachelor's or master's degree in criminal justice, international policy, international relations, or another related field;
  • Strong interest in security management/operations;
  • Professional proficiency in written and spoken English;
  • Substantive experience in the use of computers and Microsoft Office programs (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) is required;
  • Excellent analytical research and writing skills;
  • Strong attention to detail.


Physical Demands:

  • This assignment involves prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer;
  • This position operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, etc.;
  • This position may require vision, hearing, talking, standing, sitting, walking, lifting.
