Investigative Attorney

The NYC Department of Buildings is responsible for ensuring the safe and lawful use of buildings and properties by enforcing the NYC Construction Codes, Energy Code and Zoning Resolution. Under the supervision with latitude for independent action and decision making, performs Department legal work:

  • Prosecuting Department of Buildings (DOB) licensee and other cases at the Office of Administrative
  • Trials & Hearings (OATH) Trials and Hearings division.
  • Conducting interviews, preparing reports, developing, collecting, and analyzing intelligence
  • information and any other investigatory tasks.
  • Legal writing, including the preparation of petitions, discovery responses, motions and other
  • documents relating to the continuing prosecution of DOB cases.
  • Promptly and accurately communicating with senior staff important developments and outcome of
  • hearings, adjournments and other matters connected to cases at hearings.
  • Pre-hearing preparation, including general research for upcoming cases and follow through of previous
  • cases handled.
  • Performing in-house assignments relating to adjudications.
  • Actively undertaking and participating in special projects and assignments that may include making
  • recommendations about changes to codes, rules or regulations and agency policies.
  • As a member of the DOB legal team, any other duties as assigned.

This is an Agency Attorney L2

Minimum Qualifications

  • Admission to the New York State Bar; and either "2" or "3" below.
  • One year of satisfactory United States legal experience subsequent to admission to any state bar; or
  • Six months of satisfactory service as an Agency Attorney Interne (30086).

Incumbents must remain Members of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of this employment.

In Addition To Meeting The Minimum Qualification Requirements

To be assigned to Assignment Level (AL) II, candidates must have one year of experience at Assignment Level I or two years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment. To be assigned to AL III candidates must have two years of experience in Assignment Levels I and/or II or three years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment.

Preferred Skills

  • Demonstrate initiative, resourcefulness, ability to work independently as part of a team on multiple assignments with minimal supervision - Experience with criminal or civil enforcement - Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Lexis-Nexis, and Westlaw
