This position will work a hybrid schedule which includes a combination of working both onsite at La Jolla and remote.

Description

The Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute (ACTRI), is an NIH-funded Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) institution that provides the infrastructure to support high-quality and innovative translational research. ACTRI's vision is to translate scientific discoveries into improved health by delivering education, training and infrastructure for clinical research in the San Diego area and beyond. Mike Hogarth, M.D. and Davey Smith M.D. are the principal investigators on ACTRI’s CTSA grant. The ACTRI functions under the direction of Gary S. Firestein, M.D., Director, and Senior Associate Vice Chancellor Health Sciences at UC San Diego.

Within ACTRI, the Translational Research Technology Center (TRT) provides a one stop shop of flexible laboratory-based services for translational studies to ACTRI members and external collaborators. Services include biorepository, sample acquisition, and laboratory (bioanalytical and assay development). TRT provides full-service biobanking to ACTRI and affiliated institutions. The TRT Center provides analyte determinations on a variety of human and animal materials principally through immunoassays and quantitative PCR. We encourage all forms of collaborations.

Under general supervision, the Operations Manager - Biomarker Lab will oversee the management of a mid-sized immunology research laboratory within the fast paced and collaboration focused environment at the Altman Clinical and Translational Institute (ACTRI) supporting the Translational Research Technology Center (TRT). This role serves as a leadership role in executing and managing the TRT biomarker lab and will have a dotted line reporting to the Faculty Director of the TRT Center. The Faculty Director provides programmatic direction to the unit and the Operations Manager. This role will act as primary safety officer, responsible for compliance with UC San Diego safety regulations. Ensure laboratory activities are performed in compliance with best practices, including but not limited to instrument operation, general safety and result documentation.

Works with the Faculty Director of the TRT Center to oversee the activities and staff of the center including execution of research projects and providing instructional support to staff in the laboratory. Creates an inclusive and welcoming laboratory environment. This role will cultivate a culture of process improvement by making recommendations to changes needed in department/laboratory policies and procedures. Additional projects as assigned by leadership. Provide technical training to doctoral students, M.D. and Ph.D. Postdoctoral fellows, and laboratory technicians. Other duties as assigned.

Receives assignments in the form of objectives with goals and the process by which to meet the goals. Oversees the activities and staff of a laboratory including the supervision of all levels of research / instructional associates and laboratory support staff. Typically works in a large or multi-facility laboratory (ies). Supervises the development and execution of major or multi-disciplinary research projects or instructional and experiment design. Recommends changes to department policies and practices. Identifies risks and responds accordingly.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Nine years of related experience, education/training, OR an Bachelor’s degree in related area plus five years of related experience/training.
  • Focus of knowledge and skills dependent on area of specialty (laboratory research or instructional / experimental design). Advanced and highly specific knowledge and expertise associated with conducting and reporting on scientific research experiments and findings.
  • Advanced knowledge of a wide variety of specialized laboratory equipment.
  • Solid leadership skills associated with planning work assignments, establishing priorities, scheduling instructional space, and ensuring completion of multiple projects.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to develop and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty and staff.
  • Solid knowledge of data acquisition and analysis techniques.
  • Advanced knowledge of research discipline or instructional design to collaborate effectively with faculty and function as a resource to research and instructional associates.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills to effectively supervise all levels of staff.
  • Strong abilities to conduct and report on scientific experiments and findings.
  • Advanced knowledge of necessary lab safety procedures and requirements, as well as chemical disposal guidelines.
  • Proficiency with Medical Terminology.
  • Knowledge of clinical research.
  • Demonstrated ability to respond and adapt to new and changing situation.
  • Experience with tissue culture and various laboratory assays (e.g., PCR, Western Blot, immunohistochemistry).
  • Demonstrated ability to find original and effective solutions to problems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Healthcare professional experience.
  • Knowledge of UC San Diego mission, policies and procedures.
  • Demonstration of intellectual productivity through prior authorship or co-authorship in significant scientific publications.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $77,000 - $139,200 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $36.88 - $66.67

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
