Maine Trust for Local News

Reporter - Portland Press Herald

The Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram, part of the nonprofit Maine Trust for Local News, seeks an outstanding journalist to cover education statewide. The top candidate for this position will have a distinguished record of using public documents, data and compelling interviews to tell important stories.

We are an ambitious news organization with high standards, and we need a self-motivated reporter who can do it all – dailies and compelling narratives, investigations and data-driven journalism. We expect enterprise reporting – serious journalism that identifies trends, unearths news, exposes wrongdoing and spotlights achievements.

This is an intense beat. We want accountability, we want inspiring tales and storytelling, and we want to be first with important news about our schools. You'll cover a range of topics in statewide education policy as well as how kindergarten is taught in the post-COVID age. We want to know about big changes in the state university system, and we want you to take us inside elementary and high school classrooms.

Successful candidates will have daily experience in an important role and be able to submit clips that demonstrate proficiency working with public records requests and other documents. We need a reporter who is aggressive but not arrogant, who is confident but works collaboratively with editors and other staff.

For the right candidate, this is a fantastic opportunity. But you must be able to juggle a lot – big enterprise stories, big dailies and breaking news. You also must be adept at working with data, comfortable in a digital-first environment and a savvy user of social media.

If you are great at what you do and share our zeal for ambitious journalism, this is the opportunity you’ve been waiting for. You will be part of Maine’s finest and largest newsgathering operation, and you’ll live in a region with an extraordinarily high quality of life.
