POSITION OVERVIEW

The sound technician works with the CST Sound Department to install and strike audio equipment across our three theater campus. As the theater’s programing requires, they may also serve on the run crew of shows as a microphone technician (A2), or to operate mix and or playback equipment for shows or special events. Sound technicians will routinely collaborate with other production departments in the course of their work.

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement with IATSE Local 2, though previous or current union membership is not required for consideration.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Drives IDEA to Action platform by engaging in committees, events, training and other initiatives as needed.
  • Models CST’s core values of service, ingenuity, and collaboration as well as its customer service ethos.
  • Champions the organization’s commitment to a respectful, inclusive and equitable workplace.
  • Load, unload, move, and assemble mix, speaker, networking, amplification, and communications equipment.
  • Run cables.
  • Clean and organize equipment storage areas.
  • Operate sound mix equipment for shows and special events.
  • Support Sound Department during tech rehearsals including the setup and strike of tech tables and associated equipment
  • Collaborate with other technicians to positively and productively support the realization of CST productions.


ADDTIONAL DUTIES

  • Serve as A2 on select productions, working with orchestras and actors on microphone and monitoring infrastructure.
  • Serve as cover mix engineer on select productions, including straight plays, large musicals, and presented work.
  • Operate and program Q-Lab rigs.


COMPENTENCIES

Required Job Qualifications:

  • Proficient knowledge of Yamaha CL series consoles.
  • Understanding of both console setup as well as best practices in operation.
  • Proficient knowledge of basic theatrical sound systems.
  • Comprehensive understanding of QLab set-up and functionality.
  • Strong Interpersonal skills, and ability to collaborate well with others.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices related to electricity and working at heights.


Preferred Job Qualifications:

  • Experience with making various microphone rigs.
  • Comprehensive understanding of:
  • Dante I/O protocols
  • Clear-Com systems
  • Shure wireless equipment and Wireless Workbench
  • KVM infrastructure


WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Work hours will be variable depending on the phase of the project.
  • Evening, weekend, and holiday hours will be necessary at times.
  • Position will primarily function at the CST facilities on Navy Pier in Chicago, IL but will at times work in other locations such as warehouses and city parks.


PHYSICAL DEMAND

  • Perform a variety of physical tasks including but not limited to climbing, stooping, pushing, bending, kneeling, reaching, lifting, and pulling.
  • Working in a variety of environments including but not limited to construction shops, stages, trap rooms, catwalks and grids, warehouses, exposed loading docks, and outdoors.
  • Perform a variety of physical tasks while wearing safety equipment including but not limited to harness, hardhat, and safety glasses.
  • Working with others in the pushing, pulling, lifting, or moving of objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Use of manual dexterity in the operation of tools, computers, and equipment.
