About us
A Regional Tony Award recipient, Chicago Shakespeare Theater produces a year-round season—plays, musicals, world premieres, family productions, and theatrical presentations from around the globe—alongside nationally recognized education programming, each year serving tens of thousands of students, teachers, and lifelong learners. Founded in 1986, the Theater’s onstage work has expanded to as many as twenty productions and 650 performances annually. Dedicated to welcoming the next generation of theatergoers, one in four audience members is under the age of eighteen. As a nonprofit organization, Chicago Shakespeare works to embrace diversity, prioritize inclusion, provide equitable opportunities, and offer an accessible experience for all. Next stop—Middle-earth! We are thrilled to share that, following its US premiere later this month, our production of THE LORD OF THE RINGS – A MUSICAL TALE will transfer to Auckland, New Zealand this fall! Performances at The Civic Theatre begin November 5. Ever since the release of Peter Jackson’s Oscar-winning film trilogy, New Zealand has had a deep connection to this story for fans around the globe, making this an extra special next step for this stunning show.

Announcing Shakes in the City—a new evolution of Chicago Shakespeare in the Parks—offering pop-up performances and activities at parks, neighborhood festivals, and other events across Chicago! Check out https://lnkd.in/gtFDagxP for a full schedule, spanning over 20 neighborhoods from July 20–August 18. 🌳☀️ Shakespeare’s joyful comedy TWELFTH NIGHT comes to life in an immersive 45-minute performance infused with music and the playful spirit of Carnival. Tyrone Phillips, who helmed the acclaimed production of TWELFTH NIGHT on our Courtyard stage last fall, directs an acting ensemble featuring Yaw Agyeman, Ernest Bentley, Tafadzwa Diener, Dennis William Grimes, Charence Higgins, Weléla Mar Kindred, Jamaque Newberry, and Juwon Tyrel Perry. The company also includes Music Director Robert Reddrick, Production Designer Beth Laske-Miller, Stage Manager Katrina Herrmann, and Assistant Stage Manager Gianni Carcagno. At select events, teaching artist Sadira Muhammad will be leading Afro-Caribbean inspired dance and movement workshops—check out our website for more information.
