Your Responsibilities

Lockton Affinity, based in Overland Park, Kansas, is seeking an Underwriting Executive to join our underwriting department and report to the VP, Director of Underwriting. In this key role, you will be responsible for overseeing the underwriting processes, operations, and workflow of a diverse commercial insurance portfolio. You will also manage a team of underwriters, assistant underwriters, and underwriting specialists.

We are looking for candidates with a solid background in commercial insurance underwriting and operations, strong leadership skills, and a proven history of meeting underwriting objectives. As an Underwriting Executive, your responsibilities will include assessing individual risk quality, setting appropriate pricing strategies within your delegated authority, ensuring the achievement of underwriting targets, and leading your team to success.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide strong leadership for a team of underwriters, assistant underwriters and underwriting specialists. Foster a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement, underwriting discipline, and balanced growth.
  • Establish key performance indicators and monitor results for each member of the team.
  • Attract, retain, and develop top talent within the team. Provide coaching, mentorship, and opportunities for professional growth and advancement.
  • Effectively manage the performance review process for an underwriting team.
  • Develop and execute strategies to achieve premium and revenue targets, maximize profitability, and manage expenses.
  • Ensure the highest standards of underwriting quality, risk assessment, and pricing accuracy across all lines of business. Implement best practices and leverage data analytics to optimize underwriting performance.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders including distribution, client solutions and operations to drive cross-functional alignment and support business objectives.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and internal policies, proactively identifying and mitigating risks to the business.
  • Exhibit a positive, "can-do" attitude that motivates and inspires team members and adapts to changing work requirements.
  • Prepare underwriting referrals and coordinate carrier underwriting audits.
  • Effectively manage relationships with program carriers.



Other Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate flexibility and serve as an example and role model for the team.
  • Evaluate insurance risks to determine eligibility, profitability, desirability, appropriate pricing, acceptance or rejection.
  • Approve underwriting transactions and bind coverage within authority, providing analysis and file documentation to support decision-making.
  • Participate in meetings and prepare underwriting reports, reviews and presentations as needed.
  • Collaborate with other departments to foster business development opportunities and maintain a high level of service in a dynamic environment.
  • Adhere to all department guidelines, procedures, and practices and look to improve all processes.
  • Demonstrate professional, tactful negotiation skills.
  • Contribute positively to customer satisfaction and continuously strive to improve service.
  • Communicate positively to foster a cohesive work environment.
  • Protect the confidentiality of information obtained while performing job duties.
  • Develop and maintain training schedules as needed for associates.
  • Conduct regular one-on-one meetings with associates, documenting discussions and performance.
  • Conduct periodic training sessions for other departments as needed.
  • Ability to travel occasionally.
  • Prepare program premium and loss reviews.

Qualifications

EDUCATION, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • 7+ years underwriting experience.
  • 3-7 years management experience with a proven history of delivering sustainable results, revenue and growth.
  • CPCU (Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter) or other relevant insurance certifications preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Strong technical aptitude and the ability to quickly learn new systems.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple assignments.
  • Ability to make decisions in compliance with Lockton Affinity’s standards of quality, performance, and service.
  • Possess excellent organizational and people skills, work well within a team environment, and have experience meeting deadlines.
  • Accumulate required continuing education credits to maintain a current insurance license (if required).
