One of the major challenges resides in the differing views on the best way to approach helping canines find their forever home the first time. Shelters are overwhelmed with dogs being returned. Dogs are all too often viewed as commodities. A fix the problem(s) or return them mentality is unacceptable, in my opinion. Impulse adoption of any dog that may not be suitable for a family's lifestyle or household dynamics is one of the root causes perpetuating this revolving door. Adding any dog to one's family is a lifetime commitment. Every dog is unique. Each has a story. Adding a canine to any family requires time, careful thought, and an understanding of everything that will follow. Family dynamics should include everyone living in the home, frequent visitors as well as other animals living in the home. Meet and greets are important. Once you place that leash on the dog you've chosen, you are responsible for them. Remember - #dogsarefamily

The Yellow Dog campaign helps raise awareness for the general public about dogs that need some space when out on walks Not ever dog can be off lead; not every dog is ok with having other dogs approach them and not every dog wants interaction with other people or dogs. This can be for a number of reasons - the dog has had a bad experience with another dog so is scared/anxious; the dog may be in the middle of training, or simply a dog that may not like other dogs. Many rescue dogs are still settling into their new environments. The dog will already be over stimulated so by adding something yellow, allows their owners to hopefully signal that the dog needs space to others. If you come across someone who has something yellow on their dog (harness; lead; collar or a sign) please stop and think about approaching with your dog. Always ask the dog owner before approaching; they will be only too happy to explain. Also please note they know their dog better than you do because please be respectful if they ask you to step away with your dog. They may be trying to socialise their dog in areas to build confidence and also it is not always possible to avoid other dogs on each dog walk. They are trying to keep their dog safe and would not want the added responsibility of having to worry about your dog too. For more information on the campaign or please check out their site: https://lnkd.in/eWVSZBjW. #responsibledogownership #yellowdogcampaign #rescuedogs

#VolunteersWeek Today we want to put the spotlight on two very important volunteer roles - a human and dog combo! 🙍♀️🐶 Many of our dogs, especially the ex racing greyhounds, may have never have experienced other breeds of dogs before. It's important that we understand how they react to them, and the only way we can do this is by carefully introducing them to other breeds...and we are a little short of terriers in our kennels! 😁 Small dogs are particularly relevant, as they may be mistaken for a hare that has been chased around a track, but it is important to understand how our hounds cope with other breeds too. This allows us to assess whether they could be homed with a non-sighthound, or even how they might react to one when out on a walk. Therefore we rely on some wonderful human volunteers bringing their doggy volunteers to work our experienced kennel team, enabling us to test our hounds compatibility with other breeds of dog. Not only do we assess our hounds initial reaction to seeing another dog, the doggy volunteer works with the dog in question on an ongoing basis to help them understand that all not dogs have long pointy noses, and long legs! You will see the results of this testing on the their profiles. In fact, we recently put out a request for volunteer help in this regard, and we were overwhelmed with the response. Here is new recruit Bryn and his amazing mum (who was a little camera shy!), with homeless hound Charlie. Charlie hasn't come straight from the track, and with the amazing work Bryn has done, Charlie has been assessed as no longer needing a muzzle in his company. These volunteers really are invaluable to the rehabilitation and subsequent rehoming of dogs in our care and we can't thank them enough. 🙏
