🌊🐟 The ocean is our planet’s life support—and it’s in trouble. The sports industry has the power to lead restoration efforts. 🏄 As emphasized by environmentalist Paul Hawken, we must end the use of oceans as a dumping ground. Sustaining their welfare is not only essential for sports such as sailing, swimming, and surfing, but for the health of the ecosystem as a whole. 🏊 We dove into how sports can play a key role in protecting our oceans in the fifth blog of our Regeneration Revolution: Sport's Solutions to Helping End the Climate Crisis series. In a recent interview, Barton Lynch explained why surfing is his medicine: “It’s where I go to get healthy, if you’ve had a bad day you jump in the ocean and swim around, you’ll come out of that water feeling better, 100%.” Image by Tony Harrington. #bartonlynch #oceanhealth #bluehealth #mentalhealth #medicine #quotes #famousquotes #inspiration #inspirationalquotes #motivation #environmentalquotes #sustainabilityquotes #wisdom #wordsofwisdom #planetearth #climate #climatechange #ecofriendly #conservation #climateaction #socialimpact #climateeducation #surfersforclimate

Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand are projected to suffer the greatest loss of snow cover in the world – how will we adapt? These changes will have a broad impact on local economies and threaten fragile alpine ecosystems. "Yes, our recreational activities might change as we wonder whether it’s worth waxing up the skis this year – or is it time to break out the racquets? The ongoing survival of many communities might be jeopardised as a result," writes Adrian McCallum (University of the Sunshine Coast). #environment #snow #climatechange #skiing #globalwarming #research https://lnkd.in/gYa2f-yd

🌍 FIS and WMO partnership highlights the harmful effects of climate change on winter sports and tourism ❄ The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) have announced a new partnership to raise awareness of the fact that winter sports and tourism face a bleak future because of climate change. 🤝 A new Memorandum of Understanding commits the organizations to work together to highlight the far-reaching impacts of rising global temperatures on snow and ice cover and to establish practical initiatives to strengthen scientific and sporting dialogue. This is the first time that the United Nations’ specialized agency partners with an international sports federation. 🗨 “The climate crisis is obviously far bigger than FIS − or sports, for that matter: it is a genuine crossroads for mankind. It is true, though, that climate change is, simply put, an existential threat to skiing and snowboarding. We would be remiss if we did not pursue every possible effort that is rooted in science and objective analysis. This is what we are trying to follow and what is at the core of this promising partnership with the WMO,” says FIS President Johan Eliasch. Per Kyle Feldscher and Chris Liakos in CNN- "One of the key infrastructure projects designed to help tackle pollution has been a new rainwater storage basin – called the Austerlitz basin – which can hold 20 Olympic swimming pools worth of water, according to a statement from Paris 2024. Following rainy weather on June 17 and 18, the basin filled to 80% capacity, successfully preventing 40,000 cubic meters (40 million liters) of wastewater and rainwater from being discharged into the Seine, according to the city of Paris. But the water quality can change fast. Official data shows one-off rainfall events can quickly cause E. coli levels to spike again, and as recently as June 30 – following rain the previous day – E. coli levels increased to around 2000 CFU/100mL at Alexandra III Bridge, where the race is set to begin. That’s double the level needed for “good” water quality, as per World Triathlon standards."

What does climate change mean for winter sports like cross-country skiing? ClimateData.ca a project supported by Environment and Climate Change Canada shows that Canada is experiencing climate change at nearly twice the global average rate, with our winters warming faster than any other season. Use ClimateData.ca’s Explore by Location page to see how these trends are expected to continue in the future. https://ow.ly/8jhh50QxT4w These changes are not just statistics; they're a call to action. The cross-country ski community is deeply connected to our winter landscapes and has been impacted by the changing winters in Canada. Lower winter temperatures provide consistent and safe surfaces for high-performance cross-country skiers, but these temperatures are harder to find than they were when the first Olympic Winter Games began in 1924. It is crucial we work together to address these challenges and prepare for the future to save the sports we love. #ClimateChangeCanada #WinterSports #SustainableSkiing #ProtectourWinters

Swimming in the Seine? The Paris Olympics highlight the challenge of cleaning urban rivers. "The story of the Seine is not dissimilar from the fates of many urban rivers around the world. As countries industrialized and populations in cities exploded, urban waterways became a cheap means of getting rid of both residential and industrial sewage, a process that rendered many urban waterways unthinkable for swimming or other activities. With efforts underway around the world to reclaim urban waterways for city dwellers, the Seine cleanup could provide hope for other cities looking to renew their own rivers—or a warning about how difficult it is to bring a river back to life in the modern, warming world." Read more about the Seine cleanup and the history and utility of urban waterways from Bulletin associate multimedia editor Erik English: https://lnkd.in/eaP29MWC

Innovative public toilets: comfortable, substaniable and affordable. A better resource use for a better tomorrow.
The Seine in #Paris is set to host the swimming competitions for the 2024 #Olympics. Swimming was not allowed in the Seine since 1923. Now, for the first time in decades, the Seine’s water #quality has improved significantly, making it safe for swimming. The local government, together with regional authorities, has been working hard since 2016 to clean up the river. Thanks to their efforts, a 1.4 billion € #investment and some sunny weather, #water tests in late June showed excellent results. For several days, bacteria levels were well within the safe range set by #European #standards. This means that the dream of hosting #Olympic events in the Seine is still alive! But what if the weather changes? There’s no plan B. The only backup is to delay the events by a few days if there’s heavy rain. This shows just how confident the authorities are in their water improvement plan. This achievement isn’t just for the Olympics; it’s a huge step towards #sustainable #urban living. #Clean rivers contribute to #healthier cities and #happier residents. It also sets a powerful example for other cities #worldwide. If you believe in the importance of sustainable urban planning and want to learn more about the incredible work behind this transformation, get connected and join us for a better resource use.
