In Alberta, wildlife sweeps are required year-round for applicable dispositions issued by the Regulator and are an approval condition. A wildlife sweep must be conducted prior to activity resulting in land or vegetation disturbance where there is risk of wildlife features being disturbed or destroyed. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) recent report reveals that wetlands (mostly freshwater) now cover less than 6% of the lower 48 states, half their original area. Loss rates have increased by 50% since 2009. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife regulates disturbance to streambeds and #riparian habitats under section 1600 to 1617 of the Fish and Game Code. An agreement is typically needed for development in these areas. The application for streambed alteration provides information like project location, description, existing condition, and biological resources. For example, if an endangered bird was known to exist on the project site, the application must reflect that finding. Consultants meticulously outline restricted access periods coinciding with wildlife habitat areas, such as nesting periods for migratory birds in Alberta. These temporal constraints are integrated into project schedules to reduce their impact on construction timelines and the project's in-service date. In Canada, robust enforcement of environmental protection measures is standard practice, regardless of associated costs. Substantial financial investments are often allocated to construct silt fences along ROW perimeters, mitigating risks of toads infiltrating construction zones and encountering construction vehicles. Instances like halting pipeline construction for nine days due to a gravid duck awaiting egg laying exemplify the stringent adherence to wildlife protection protocols. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has approved a 20-year agreement with the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) and LCRA Transmission Services Corporation (LCRA TSC) to conserve four freshwater mussel species in the lower Colorado River basin of Texas. In return for implementing voluntary conservation measures for the Texas pimpleback, Texas fawnsfoot, Texas fatmucket, and Balcones spike, the Candidate Conservation Agreement with Assurances (CCAA) provides LCRA and LCRA TSC assurance that they can continue to operate and maintain important utility infrastructure that provides water and power within the lower Colorado River basin should these species receive an Endangered Species Act listing. These sweeps are required for applicable dispositions issued by the Regulator. Before any activity that could disturb land or vegetation, such as development, wildlife sweeps must be conducted. Here are some key points about wildlife sweeps in Alberta: 👉 Wildlife sweeps aim to identify and protect important wildlife features within a proposed development site. These features include occupied raptor nests, heron rookeries, occupied dens, hibernacula, and natural mineral licks. 👉 The responsibility for conducting wildlife sweeps lies with the Disposition Holder, Licensee, or Permit Holder. If an important wildlife feature is disturbed or destroyed due to an inadequate sweep, enforcement actions may be taken under the Wildlife Act or Public Lands Act. 👉 Someone with the education, knowledge, or experience to locate and identify important wildlife features should conduct the sweep. 👉 The wildlife sweep must cover the proposed disturbance site and a 100-meter buffer around it. 👉 Wildlife sweeps should occur immediately before activities and consider seasonal variations in occupancy (e.g., breeding den versus hibernation den).
