Helping Aspiring PMs & Veterans Pursue Their Project Management Career | PM Career Coach | PM Resume Writer | Free PM Resume Review
From "𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘵𝘩 𝘞𝘪𝘯𝘨" to not paying federal taxes An episode #military & #veterans will enjoy! Excited to share that I had the privilege of being invited to the Military Transition Academy Podcast, hosted by the amazing Misty Moreno, PHR, PMP! Misty is an Air Force Veteran, a dedicated mentor for Veterans, and an extremely important mentor and individual at Vets2PM. During our conversation, I shared my own story that not many know - Despite following everything "by the book" during my separation, things didn’t go as planned (which is an understatement). • I had a “professional” resume (or so I thought). • I had a job offer lined up, offer letter in hand. • Then everything fell through, and I found myself jobless for over 4 months. Even with setbacks, I never let go of the mindset that I was on the right path. The struggles I had in my transition helped me find my true value, and ultimately led me to where I am today ↳Living in Germany, ↳Exploring the world ↳And most importantly... 👉Helping US Veterans & Aspiring PMs Pursue Their PM Career. In this episode, we focus on: • The mindset Veterans need to succeed in their transition. • Lessons learned from TAP and resume tips for project managers. • Finding overseas job opportunities. • What to do when your plan falls apart. Check it out: 🎧 Listen here: https://lnkd.in/e9VRqqRh 🎥 Watch here: https://lnkd.in/ejZkXGS9 Again, a huge thank you to Misty and Vets2PM for this incredible opportunity to help support our Veteran community. It was a pleasure to share my journey and hopefully inspire others who may be going through similar challenges. P.S. - Yes, we really did have a conversation about "The Fourth Wing" (iykyk)😆 #projectmanagement #careers #veterans #military #jobseekers #jobsearch

Founder Friday - #smallbusinessowners can feel like a caged bird. https://lnkd.in/e4sbRRgQ Watching from the inside as big businesses seem to win the war on talent. #skillsbasedhiring is the ammunition that a small business can use to get to the untapped talent communities of the #military, #diversabilities, #justiceinvolved. When you look at the roles in your small business, really think about: 🥁 what skills are truly needed on day one 🔨 what can be trained for on the job and ✂ which skills do not matter at all. Then understand this: 🔑 what skills your current employees have 🔓 what skills they can develop and 🔎 what skills you need to hire for so that you can build your talent strategies accordingly. There is no talent shortage when you hire for potential not the past. Your business is unique and you need candidates with the skills your business needs. Don't settle and miss the riches. Your business is worth more and the people you need to work with you are worth more. #winwithskills

Life after the the #ArmedForces is not easy. That's why I do what I do. This is an extract from a podcast with Nick Haley where I talk about part of my journey since I left the Army. The whole episode can be found at Little Big Vets. Everything I have done since I left the Army, I have approached with #energy, #hardwork and #integrity. As you will see from this clip, sometimes that isn't enough. You need a bit of luck too. This shows some of the brutal realities of life in the commercial world for a former soldier. My journey has not been straightforward and the challenges continue. In addition to the above qualities, I now add #resilience and #determination, as I seek to help #veterans find their way in their second career after the #military. If it's #honesty you want, you can find that here too. I understand what it is like to be a #businessowner and the important decisions that you have to make. One of those is good hires. If you want someone in the trenches with you, who will roll up their sleeves and dig deep to be part of your success, you should absolutely #hireaveteran. #militarytransition #resettlement

I’m always excited to share posts like these because they fit into the essays, charts, and algorithms I work on in my “spare” time. I’ve got a whole series discussing LinkedIn personalities, job seeking advice, and methods for finding a “right fit” for your next career. I’ve found pay is far less important than the passion, prestige, and purview (from my “Four P’s” article). More than any of those is Place. The work/life environment , people, and location you want to spend your time with. I had this conversation with Aaron Hoffman and Jerry Foulis yesterday morning. Talked about this a lot with Scott H. Stalker as well. Do what makes you happy. There is no “correct” follow-on career. There are only the choices you make. The below message from David Sanford bolsters the Pay discussion, and I think it’s helpful for those transitioning from military/government to the private sector to think about. That includes many of my connections. In scholarly essays on choices and outcomes, you’ll often see that we nearly always overestimate the importance of an event and the impact that I’ll have on the rest of our lives. Throughout the military transition, several people mentioned that our career decisions were not permanent. We could pick a job, like it or not, and moved to the next job. That is absolutely the case. Find what you want to do, and then make that the dream you pursue. While there is no way of proving the false negative, I am sure your health, happiness, and memories will thank you later. #veteranshelpingveterans #AmericaTogether United States Marine Corps US Army United States Space Force U.S. Coast Guard US Navy United States Air Force U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs #LearningEveryDay #SeekSelfImprovement
Retired Marine and former Corporate leader. I tell stories of my corporate life to help others better understand the true culture of large corporations.
I know Will Smith is on everyone's naughty list, and I too have been throwing stones from the porch of my glass house. However, I think he's the perfect person to quote to help military members understand one thing about transitioning. Of course, it's something we've all heard said one way or another, but sometimes you hear something said differently and it sticks. Will Smith, "I had so much money, I could literally buy anything and everything I ever wanted. And I did, and none of it brought me a day of happiness. The gift I wish I could give everyone is for them to have everything they ever wanted, so they could see material things do not make you happy." Veterans take note: When I retired, I took a corporate position doing what I never wanted to do, with people I didn't want to do it with, but they offered me more money than I made as a Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel, with yearly bonuses greater than any of my employees made the entire year. I was already in a great financial position and money shouldn't have been a driving factor, but money is a seductress. For a decade, I hated every day at work and pretty much every boss I had. What's really sad is I knew during the interview process, I did not want to be around most of the people interviewing me...EVER. During my transition, the word "happiness" was never mentioned, not once by anyone. It's not a cool word. It's not a macho word. Podcasts advocating extreme this and that never say, "extreme happiness." Transitioning from the military is hard enough, but it's even harder if you're unhappy with your job. Put the word "happiness" on your goals list when you retire. The cool podcasters will never know. #veterans #veteranshelpingveterans #marines
