Incredible to join the Farnborough International Airshow this week — the world’s largest showcase of aviation and aerospace innovation. But nothing quite brings climate impact into sharper focus than hosting 75,000 travelling guests from 44 countries, all meeting beneath a parade of future aircraft. Carbon emissions are existential to the aviation sector (as with all other hard-to-abate industries). But it has a real opportunity to lead, building a clear narrative of its plans to both reduce and permanently remove residual emissions to reach net zero by 2050. That’s why serious action on carbon removal is now urgent for aviation. CUR8’s Gabrielle Walker joined a panel on this topic yesterday alongside key partners at British Airways Carrie Harris, Oxford University Myles Allen, 1PointFive Anna Stukas, IATA Hemant Mistry. Here are my key takeaways (contact me if you'd like the full recording). ✈ Aviation should consider itself a major stakeholder of the carbon removal industry. IATA predicts aviation firms will require 500 million tonnes capacity in 2050, representing c. 7.5% global removals supply (much greater if we assume demand will be for a share of the highest durability removals only). ✈ Aviation leaders must start acting now, and the business case has never been clearer. With demand growing faster than supply can scale, we’ve seen market prices rise 40% in 2 years, and predict a further 50% to 2035. Not only is acting now imperative to meet 2050 scale, purchasing offtakes today makes commercial sense for any firm expecting to use removals in the next 10 years. ✈ Compliance is coming and fast, so it makes sense to be prepared. Airlines will lead the way with clear incentives now emerging under SAF mandates, and as CORSIA integrates removals into offsetting obligations. ✈ An ambitious UK government can capture an opportunity to lead internationally. Keir Starmer opened the airshow yesterday, and his Government has already set out plans to integrate removals into the UK ETS as early as 2027 — with a huge opportunity to generate jobs and growth nationwide in a new UK green industry.
🛫 CUR8 is here at Farnborough International Airshow 2024 talking to leaders in aviation about the importance of carbon removal. This afternoon, Gabrielle Walker, Co-Founder and Chief Scientist of CUR8, spoke on the panel “Carbon Removals: Putting the ‘Net’ in Net Zero”. 🌍 She was joined by the fantastic Anna Stukas from 1PointFive, Myles Allen from University of Oxford, Carrie Harris from British Airways and Hemant Mistry from International Air Transport Association (IATA). 💡 What are our key takeaways? 🔹 Global aviation has an opportunity to act as a prime mover of carbon removal — IATA roadmaps predict aviation will be a major removal user in 2050, requiring 500 million tonnes annually (assuming all other decarbonisation efforts are successful). By taking action now, airlines and manufacturers can secure future supply and lead an important narrative across hard-to-abate sectors of taking ownership over residual emissions. 🔹 The business case for removals has become clear and compelling — beyond the urgency of action on carbon needed, we will see prices rise as removal supply faces constraints. Smart buyers and CFOs will purchase diverse portfolios of removals using long-term offtakes to secure the best prices and access over the next 10 years. 🔹 Supporting carbon removal technologies will complement the scale-up of SAF — connecting aviation’s in-sector solutions to carbon removals will speed up adoption, with clear incentives to couple removals and SAF to produce clean fuels. 🔹 Moving from voluntary corporate action to global compliance markets is key — in aviation, the CORSIA scheme provides a foundation to scale the first international carbon removal obligations. 🔹 The UK has an opportunity to demonstrate global leadership — Keir Starmer opened the conference this morning, and the new Labour government can play a strong role in building a UK removal industry and creating new high-skilled green jobs nationwide. Starting by integrating carbon removals into UK airlines’ obligations under the SAF mandate and UK ETS will solidify buyers’ incentives. #climateaction #carbonremovals #aviation

As a hard to abate industry, airline companies don’t have a single straightforward path towards decarbonization. But as the Biden administration just released its guidance on tax credits for sustainable aviation fuels, on this episode we look at what levers airlines companies have at their disposal. We discuss which ones are likely to be more impactful as the industry prepares itself to meet its 2050 #netzero target. http://ms.spr.ly/6046YkFiI

We love talking about how our AIRMADE™ System is revolutionary in the way it converts CO2 into carbon-negative chemicals and fuel, but sometimes it’s helpful to take a step back and think about what it’s actually doing: preventing tonnes of excess CO2 from entering Earth’s atmosphere. Every day at AIR COMPANY we’re working towards real, measurable change. Even though it’s all around us, CO2 is invisible. So for our latest design series, we set out to visualize our impact, creating physical representations of what 1 lb of CO2 actually means. Using three different states of matter—solid, liquid and air—we’ve brought visibility to what otherwise remains unseen. Read more on AIR.Index. https://lnkd.in/gfNisWAg

Are you struggling with the notion that offsets and carbon credits are basically not the greatest idea? Well that's my sentiment. It is just a zero sum game. Right? Well it would appear that it's not very effective either. It masks how aviation is not fulfilling is fair share. In my view it is a regulatory dodge and it is time we actually paid the true cost of flying rather than mitigation. https://lnkd.in/ga2f8Pum #sustainability #airlines #offsets. Is air cargo on the path to a greener future? 🍃 The quest for sustainability within the air cargo sector is both a formidable challenge and an imperative mission as the industry works to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. But how much progress has been made by the multifaceted strategies and innovations designed to push the industry towards a greener future? “One thing we must recognise in the air cargo industry is that we’re part of the global economy,” Glyn Hughes, the Director General of The International Air Cargo Association TIACA, shared, shining a light on the industry’s progress. “The global economy connects manufacturers, producers, and growers globally with consumers from across the world". Senator Menjivar's proposal aims to ban leaded aviation fuel sales in #California by 2030. Recent studies near Livermore Airport revealed concerning #lead levels in children living nearby, highlighting the urgent need for action as there is no "safe" level of #LeadExposure. While transitioning away from leaded aviation fuel is indeed crucial for our well-being, efforts must ensure that any changes are carefully implemented to maintain safety standards, as abrupt shifts risk unintended consequences. https://lnkd.in/eZmN7Ycm
