Museums are generally pretty risk averse institutions. Even the smallest changes can be slow and stressful for many organizations. As many of you know, The Rubin Museum is rethinking what a museum could and should be. Check out this op-ed from The Rubin's Executive Director Jorrit Britschgi for more about their future plans. What other museums are disrupting the norm and experimenting with new strategies and models? https://lnkd.in/ePcuvcFs
"... Letting go of a museum building has freed the organisation to think and act locally, nationally and globally all at once. It is a bold step for a small organisation, and not without risks, but the Rubin is embracing non-attachment and impermanence." - OpEd by the Rubin Museum of Art's Executive Director Jorrit Britschgi. Opening doors, increasing access, advertising... possibly the best way to ensure longevity of our museums and protectors of material culture, art and our collective heritage is to remember that nonprofits are businesses that need to be professional, current and innovative in how they serve their patrons. From my perspective, that service is driven from the collection. What's new in your world? Would it work in a museum?

Museum visitation data has been a hot topic since Covid. How far it dipped, how many institutions big and small went under, and when will we return to pre-pandemic levels? This is one of the most recent reports I've seen and presents the first actually-kind-of-nearly-bright outlooks. With summer coming things could bump up even more :) Granted the survey looks at only the "top" 100 museums, but the outlook bodes well for smaller institutions. #museums #visitation #museumattendance https://lnkd.in/g8dZWMRg

“Although the capital is well served by national museums, they are mainly located in the centre of the city and serve a national and international audience, whereas the Local Authority museums are mainly in the outer boroughs and are usually conceived as a service for the neighbourhood.” What comes as such a startling result of these nationwide museum closures is that local neighbourhoods and communities are suffering at the hands of larger, income-based sites. Mapping Museums Lab indicates that museum attendance has increased since the Millenium, yet many museums (especially smaller, local ones) are being left behind, viewed as an unnecessary expense against larger cultural venues. However, local communities can attest to the impacts of these museum closures and are largely ignored. I hope that, for the future of the museum industry in the UK, leadership must extend support to—rather than neglect—local historical venues that continue to provide an invaluable service to their local communities.

1,324,221 people visited the Guggenheim Bilbao Museum in 2023 As a highlight, in 2023 the Museum has recovered the number of pre-pandemic foreign visitors. They now account for 60% of total visitors (10% more than in 2022). By percentages, 16% of the total public came from France, 7% from Germany, 6% from Great Britain, 6% from the United States, and 4% from Italy. Within Spain, most visitors came from the Basque Country, which accounts for 13% of the total, followed by 5% from Madrid and 5% from Catalonia. https://lnkd.in/gp7egmDw.

Can endorse this op-ed recommendation from the Rubin. This is a great example of what it looks like to decide on and implement a bold new strategy--without hedging or watering it down.

An interesting article which looks at data regarding repeat visitation at museums. Many visitors listed their number one interest in returning to a museum would be to "see something new". I think this perspective gives a lot of backing to the importance of why museums should invest in constant rotation of permanent collection displays and continuous acquisition of new diverse works with modern relevancy.
