#WeBlog Visiting art comfortably from home and anywhere: many museums have revolutionized the cultural experience through virtual and digital tours available online. This new way of enjoying and approaching art through new modes of interaction, however, is certainly not immune to risks. Maria Chiara Ciaccheri, a consultant and researcher specialized in Museum Accessibility, discusses this topic in the following article, originally published on the MuseumNext (MuseumNext) blog. Opening doors, increasing access, advertising... possibly the best way to ensure longevity of our museums and protectors of material culture, art and our collective heritage is to remember that nonprofits are businesses that need to be professional, current and innovative in how they serve their patrons. From my perspective, that service is driven from the collection. What's new in your world? Would it work in a museum?

https://lnkd.in/eq2VwXce Our Center for the Future of Museums (CFM) is 15 this year! 🎉 CFM offers research, insights, and professional development opportunities to help museum people understand the cultural, political, economic, environmental, and technological trends shaping our field and the world, hone their strategic foresight skills, and envision how museums can help their communities thrive in coming decades. Elizabeth Merritt is CFM’s founding director and AAM’s Vice President for Strategic Foresight. Prior to this, Elizabeth led AAM’s Excellence Programs and research activities, and worked in museums in administration, curation, and collections management. But what does the day-to-day work of a futurist really look like? Attractions Management recently asked to find out! Elizabeth shared: “I create little temporal anomalies that give museum people a glimpse into what the world might be like, decades hence. That sounds very sci-fi, but it’s a pretty good summary of what a futurist does. In day-to-day practice, this involves teaching, forecasting and research. I teach museum people the skills of foresight, starting with a basic awareness of the fact that decisions about long-term organizations, such as museums, need to be made in the context of envisioning long-term futures.” Our team at AAM is often treated to Elizabeth’s cat cameos during Zoom meetings (the cats are all named after museums, by the way) and the amazing, very well-adorned shoes she rocks at Annual Meeting each year. How did Elizabeth get a decades-long birds eye view of these trends? In part, from years of documenting them for the annual forecasting report TrendsWatch. “I’ve documented museums combatting climate change, supporting people who are homeless, advocating for criminal justice reform and fostering empathy. This cause-based work is rooted in their core strengths, but deploys those strengths to meet the needs of their communities.” “Individually and collectively, museums are waking up to the power they have to shape the future.” The work of someone constantly scanning for trends can sometimes be subject to negative news cycles (remember to pause and take a dose of positive news!). At other times, the work of a futurist can paint a clear picture of museums' essential value. “I think it’s entirely possible we might look back in 100 years and recognize that museums played a significant role in holding our country together through difficult times, by helping people understand and become more tolerant of other points of view.”

“Although the capital is well served by national museums, they are mainly located in the centre of the city and serve a national and international audience, whereas the Local Authority museums are mainly in the outer boroughs and are usually conceived as a service for the neighbourhood.” What comes as such a startling result of these nationwide museum closures is that local neighbourhoods and communities are suffering at the hands of larger, income-based sites. Mapping Museums Lab indicates that museum attendance has increased since the Millenium, yet many museums (especially smaller, local ones) are being left behind, viewed as an unnecessary expense against larger cultural venues. However, local communities can attest to the impacts of these museum closures and are largely ignored. I hope that, for the future of the museum industry in the UK, leadership must extend support to—rather than neglect—local historical venues that continue to provide an invaluable service to their local communities.

Art is as old as human history, but art museums as we know them are relatively modern institutions that have always adapted to reflect their times. No longer identifying themselves as stewards of artwork for people who can afford to collect it, many museums now embrace their nonprofit status to serve and engage the public at large. But how is such transformation reflected in museum operations, and how can museums leverage innovation to support their evolving missions? Are there any factors related to adopting virtual museums? "Factors Determining Whether an Art Museum Will Offer Virtual Content: An Empirical Study in South Korea," has been published in Volume 40, Issue 6 of the International Journal of Human–Computer Interaction, within the special issue on Advanced Interaction in Cultural Heritage. This study began during my first semester of graduate school. With a background in art and design and a particular interest in museums, I aimed to combine my two interests—art museums and the media industry—through this research. Though there are still limitations, this piece is meaningful to me as it is the first paper published in my scholarly journey. The study includes a definition of virtual museums. If you are exploring virtual museums, it will be a good starting point. Plus, the results show that the presence of collection information, the size of the collection, and the exhibition space’s size are all positively related to the presence of virtual content, based on a quantitative analysis. You can find more details from the article. https://lnkd.in/eiZftuq4 I would like to thank my adviser, Professor Kim, for his invaluable guidance and support in the completion of this publication. Additionally, I extend my gratitude to the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Gwacheon, South Korea, for allowing me to include their virtual exhibition image in my paper.

Museum visitation data has been a hot topic since Covid. How far it dipped, how many institutions big and small went under, and when will we return to pre-pandemic levels? This is one of the most recent reports I've seen and presents the first actually-kind-of-nearly-bright outlooks. With summer coming things could bump up even more :) Granted the survey looks at only the "top" 100 museums, but the outlook bodes well for smaller institutions. #museums #visitation #museumattendance https://lnkd.in/g8dZWMRg
