Museum visitation data has been a hot topic since Covid. How far it dipped, how many institutions big and small went under, and when will we return to pre-pandemic levels? This is one of the most recent reports I've seen and presents the first actually-kind-of-nearly-bright outlooks. With summer coming things could bump up even more :) Granted the survey looks at only the "top" 100 museums, but the outlook bodes well for smaller institutions. #museums #visitation #museumattendance https://lnkd.in/g8dZWMRg

Museums are generally pretty risk averse institutions. Even the smallest changes can be slow and stressful for many organizations. As many of you know, The Rubin Museum is rethinking what a museum could and should be. Check out this op-ed from The Rubin's Executive Director Jorrit Britschgi for more about their future plans. What other museums are disrupting the norm and experimenting with new strategies and models? https://lnkd.in/ePcuvcFs
"... Letting go of a museum building has freed the organisation to think and act locally, nationally and globally all at once. It is a bold step for a small organisation, and not without risks, but the Rubin is embracing non-attachment and impermanence." - OpEd by the Rubin Museum of Art's Executive Director Jorrit Britschgi. Can endorse this op-ed recommendation from the Rubin. This is a great example of what it looks like to decide on and implement a bold new strategy--without hedging or watering it down.

Art is as old as human history, but art museums as we know them are relatively modern institutions that have always adapted to reflect their times. No longer identifying themselves as stewards of artwork for people who can afford to collect it, many museums now embrace their nonprofit status to serve and engage the public at large. But how is such transformation reflected in museum operations, and how can museums leverage innovation to support their evolving missions? Opening doors, increasing access, advertising... possibly the best way to ensure longevity of our museums and protectors of material culture, art and our collective heritage is to remember that nonprofits are businesses that need to be professional, current and innovative in how they serve their patrons. From my perspective, that service is driven from the collection. What's new in your world? Would it work in a museum?

The National Museum of Korea, as reported by the UK art media ‘Art Newspaper,’ welcomed a record-breaking 4,182,850 visitors in 2023, marking a notable 22.5% increase from the previous year. This achievement placed the museum as the sixth most visited globally among those surveyed, a significant milestone as it was the first time its annual visitors exceeded 4 million since its founding in 1945. The Art Newspaper highlighted the National Museum of Korea‘s success in drawing more visitors, noting a substantial resurgence in visitor numbers in 2022 and a further increase in 2023. This success positioned the museum at the forefront in Asia in terms of visitor rankings. In comparison to other museums, the Louvre Museum in Paris topped the list with 8.86 million visitors, followed by the Vatican Museums with 6.76 million visitors, the British Museum with 5.83 million visitors, the Metropolitan Museum of Art with 5.36 million visitors, and the Tate Modern with 4.74 million visitors, ranking second to fifth, respectively. Additionally, the Gyeongju National Museum, an affiliate of the National Museum of Korea, welcomed 1,340,320 visitors in 2023, securing the 43rd position in the survey. These achievements underscore the resilience and adaptability of Korean museums in navigating the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Art Newspaper emphasized that many museums worldwide, including the National Central Museum, have successfully maintained visitor numbers similar to those in 2019, indicating a positive trend in the recovery of the museum sector from the impact of the pandemic. The #ArtNewspaper has reported that #visitor numbers at the world’s largest #museums of art have largely returned to their #pre-pandemic levels. The #Covid-19 pandemic caused museum visitor numbers to plummet across the world as #institutions shut their doors and people were forced to stay inside. The number of people visiting the most-visited 100 museums fell from 230 million in 2019, the last full pre-pandemic year, to just 54m in 2020. Since then we have seen a slow recovery, with 71m #visitors in 2021 and 141m in 2022. Although the total number of visitors to the top 100 museums was 176 million in 2023, the survey shows that many of the world’s largest museums are now close to their 2019 visitor numbers. The Musée du Louvre in #Paris is once again the most-visited museum in the world with 8.9 million visitors, just 8% below its 2019 figure. The The British Museum in #London had 5.8 million visitors (7% down on 2019), the #PradoMuseum in #Madrid 3.3 million (5% down) and the #VaticanMuseums in #Rome 6.8 million (2% down). https://lnkd.in/gjRUwxMu #museum #museums #institutions #community #fundraising #experience #art #arts #culture #nonprofit #artificialintelligence Autry Museum of the American West Western Museums Association (WMA) American Alliance of Museums CALIFORNIA ASSOCIATION OF MUSEUMS Museums Association SoCal Museums MuseumWeek The Art Newspaper ARTnews Artnews.lt Luiss Business School Luiss Guido Carli University

7moThanks for sharing--and fascinating to see some of the museums on this list! Other countries seem to have embraced a culture of museum-going much more than the US, it would seem!
