Day 1: Listening "Servant Leadership Principle #1: Listening Listening is the foundation of servant leadership. It involves actively seeking out and considering the input of others, which fosters a culture of trust and collaboration. Example: Howard Schultz, former CEO of Starbucks, exemplified this principle by holding regular open forums where employees could share their ideas and concerns. This practice not only made employees feel valued but also drove innovation within the company. Let’s strive to be leaders who listen! #ServantLeadership #ActiveListening #HowardSchultz" #starbucks #Listening

Inspiring conversation today about servant leadership with Howard Behar of #starbucks legend. (I'm in the small square and he's in the big one 😀 ) He shared some great insights with a good integration of confidence and humility. For me, the entire conversation was affirming that the work I do with leaders is aligned with my values and the values of my clients. A few highlights: --the goal is to integrate the caring for people with the success of the company. It's never either/or and profits at any cost never works --when you lose your way, you find your way by reconnecting with your values, personally and professionally --always balance your communication by telling the truth and speaking from the heart #servantleadership #valuesbasedleadership #itsnotaboutthecoffee #changethenarrative

Donna, our CPO, closed out the Leading @ Walmart series earlier this week. Being in Global People, I have the joy of listening to Donna often, and this session was just as great. She focused on teams, feedback, and performance of self and others. Though I will share a few key takeaways below, one that really stuck out was her statement that "leading others is the ultimate service calling" and this holds true whether it is direct or indirect leadership. As a leader we have a lot of influence in how someone perceives themself, the work, and the company. Other key takeaways include: -Talent hording is a bad habit. Break it for the sake of the associate, and company. -Yes, hard feedback is difficult, but one of the most important things we can do. -The contribution we have to belonging in instrumental in the success of our associates and company. I am grateful for the opportunity to have sessions with three of our C-suite leaders who were all knowledgeable and passionate about their topics. This is Walmart. #TeamWalmart

Have you heard the leadership terms "inverted pyramid" or "servant leadership?" They go hand in hand. I learned A LOT at Nordstrom about leadership, and these concepts have stuck with me throughout my career: *Inverted Pyramid* Those you serve are at the top, and YOU are at the bottom. Customers, employees, or students are examples of what could be at the top of your pyramid. It's a way to remember that you are the foundation that supports the most important pillars of your business: the people you support. *Servant Leadership* Describes leading those you support with a serving mindset: you serve those who you lead. The best leaders serve their employees, NOT the other way around. Approachability, availability, consistency, and respect are key pillars of servant leadership. I've led teams for twenty years. When I was introduced to these concepts almost a decade ago and saw them in action, I became a MUCH better leader. And leadership became MUCH easier. In my years at both T-Mobile and Nordstrom, I was so impressed with senior leadership's commitment to servant leadership and the inverted pyramid. These were terms they used and used often. Even though T-Mobile didn't utilize this terminology the way Nordstrom did, T-Mobile's senior leaders embodied these concepts as well. The Nordstrom brothers, Tanner Moxcey, Brian Roth, CPF, Jon Freier, and Katie Oaklund are a few leaders I've had who epitomize both of these leadership qualities. It's a privilege to work with leaders who put *you* and *the customer* at the heart of everything they do. __ In the comments: - Tag a leader who embodies these characteristics, let's thank them! - Are you a servant leader or striving to be one? - Does your organization live & breath these values? __ #chiefofstaff #executiveassistant #leadership #personaldevelopment

Starbucks recently made a leadership change, replacing their CEO, Laxman Narasimhan, with Chipotle’s Brian Niccol. This shift immediately boosted Starbucks' stock by 25%, signaling a wave of renewed confidence from investors, employees, and customers alike. Why such a strong reaction? It’s simple: leadership matters. Narasimhan had been quoted as saying he doesn’t work a minute past 6 p.m., implying that after-hours communication was an exception rather than the norm. In contrast, Niccol is widely known for his accessibility, his ability to inspire, and his knack for driving innovation. This shows us an important lesson: having a leader who is both inspirational and approachable is critical to the success of any organization. People need to feel like they can connect with their leader, and that their leader will push the organization forward with vision and energy. When leadership embodies these qualities, it ignites hope and sparks innovation across the entire company. A leader who inspires and is approachable has the power to create a thriving culture that not only drives growth but also secures buy-in from every corner of the business. #leadership #cultur #inspire #Starbucks #organization #people

Expressing deep gratitude for the incredible journey in retail and the invaluable lessons bestowed upon me by inspiring leaders. 🙏 Reflecting on this path, I've come to understand that success isn't solely about pursuing personal desires; it's a collaborative effort within a team. Through the ups and downs of the retail landscape, I've learned that true leadership goes beyond individual aspirations. It's about creating a cohesive and supportive team environment. Each leader I've encountered has left an indelible mark, teaching me the importance of empathy, resilience, and leading by example. As I continue to grow both personally and professionally, I am genuinely thankful for the experiences that have shaped my perspective. Here's to embracing the journey, cherishing the lessons, and always striving to set a positive example for those around me. #Gratitude #RetailJourney #LeadershipLessons #TeamworkMatters

Like Walmart or not, Sam Walton had an outlook that believed people are the most important asset and genuinely cared about people. His simple philosophy was ensuring that if you want the people in the store to look after the customers, the leaders have to make sure they are taking care of the people. Granted, Walmart has grown and our perception may or not be outstanding in this regard but most will never run an organization of this size. The main thing is leaders go out of their way to prioritize their people. The good news is X5 Management has training for that!
