Building Equity and Equality for the black Transgender community in the South! Founder of The Trans Games, Breathing While Black & Trans and Color N Raw.
In the discourse surrounding the decriminalization of oppressive laws, transparency and the pursuit of practical solutions are paramount. However, it's essential to acknowledge that Black transgender individuals should have the same privilege to voice their concerns in spaces. To address this disparity, a proactive approach is needed to create inclusive environments that invite and amplify the voices of Black transgender individuals. By fostering these spaces, we can ensure that their perspectives contribute meaningfully to the discussions surrounding decriminalization, fostering a more equitable and just society.

Thank you so much for this shoutout. For context, there are no such things as new words, but I was the first to theorize and popularize BlaQueer back in 2007, as rejection of the Black first, queer first notion. In my view they are always, already co-forming each other, from the womb to the tomb, and there is no separation, even before identity is articulated. I first wrote about this on the tumblr blog blaqueerpoz and then the long running website blaqueerflow and finally my book Godless Circumcisions: A re-membering & recollecting of Blackness, Queerness & Flows of Survivance.
Exploring the unique complexities of Black LGBTQIA+ identities. 🧔🏿♂️🏳️🌈 We’re closing out #BlackHistoryMonth and #LGBTHistoryMonth with a term that directly acknowledges how these two identities can intersect: BlaQueer. 💜 BlaQ/BlaQueer is a term for people of Black/African descent and/or from the African diaspora who recognize their LGBTQIA+ identity being saliently identity attached to their Blackness and vice versa. It’s a word rooted in intersectional thought, recognising both the unique challenges and joys that BlaQueer folk experience while moving through the world. 🌍 BlaQueer identities often don’t conform to traditional gender roles within wider society or heteronormative Black communities, and so creating spaces where BlaQueer people can explore the nuances of their identities together is extremely important. If you’d like to learn more about this topic, we’d recommend checking out the work of Dr. Anansi Wilson, JD PhD, an associate professor of law who has written much on the subject, especially through the lens of how BlaQueer identities are unfairly criminalised. 📖 📚 Continue your learning journey with our Queer Allyship Lexicon: https://lnkd.in/eHEE9Hmp #BlackPride #Intersectionality #WordOfTheWeek

During Black History Month, we celebrate Black legal trailblazers like Tarana Burke, founder of the #MeToo movement, whose advocacy has empowered survivors of sexual violence to seek justice. The #MeToo movement, born out of Burke's commitment to serving marginalized groups and promoting gender equity, has emerged as a powerful force for change. Over the past decade, its reach has extended far beyond its origins, becoming a global platform for survivors to share their stories and demand accountability. Through landmark cases such as the Harvey Weinstein trial, the #MeToo movement has brought sexual abuse, a topic once shrouded in silence, into the public eye and legal forefront. This newfound legal window has empowered countless individuals to come forward with their stories of survival, sparking crucial conversations and driving systemic change. As we commemorate Black History Month, we not only honor the legacy of Tarana Burke and other Black legal trailblazers but also reaffirm our commitment to championing justice and equality for all. #BlackHistoryMonth #LegalTrailblazers #MeToo #Equality #Blackleadersinhistory #BachusandSchanker #LegalAssistance

June is a powerful month, marked by varied significant celebrations: Juneteenth, commemorating when the news of the end of slavery reached the remaining enslaved Black people in the US, and Pride Month, honoring the LGBTQIA+ fight for equality. At CHALICE Premium, these celebrations are deeply intertwined. We celebrate the spirit of these moments – the resilience of Black Americans and the fight for LGBTQIA+ equality – not just in June, but throughout the year. Intersectionality, a framework developed by Black feminist scholars like Patricia Hill Collins, reminds us that social identities like race, gender, and sexual orientation overlap. Black LGBTQIA+ individuals face unique challenges navigating a world with prejudice based on both race and sexual orientation. The iconic rainbow Pride flag, while powerful, doesn't fully encompass this complexity. #Juneteenth #PrideMonth #BlackPride #CHALICEPremium #Intersectionality #CelebrateDiversity
