PSA for all my safety-minded friends: Effective January 16, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) raised the penalties for workplace safety violations to maintain their deterrent effect and promote compliance with the law. The regulator's maximum penalties for serious and other-than-serious violations have increased by 3.24% from $15,625 per violation to $16,131 per violation. The maximum penalty for willful or repeated violations has also increased from $156,259 per violation to $161,323 per violation. It's important to note that a majority of OSHA's mission is enforcement of fines and as outlined above, they can be quite costly. However, with some diligence, these fines can be avoided. There is a lot of confusion surrounding OSHA reporting timeframes. It's crucial to remember that a fatality must be reported within 8 hours of the accident, while any hospitalization or amputation needs to be reported within 24 hours. 100% Everything is great in the safety world until there's a serious event or accident. If you're a safety professional working for a company then you should strive to be constantly improving your health and safety plan. And just remember to DOCUMENT DOCUMENT DOCUMENT. If it's not documented, then it's going to be more difficult to pull those records and prove it in court down the road. Work proactively. Don't be reactive when it comes to improving the safety of your workplace.
