Join AbilityPath in celebrating Disability Pride Month to honor the history, achievements, experiences, and struggles of the disability community. This July, we recognize the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a pivotal legislation that promoted inclusion in society. The theme for Disability Pride Month 2024, running from July 1–31, is "We Want a Life Like Yours". This theme, created by The Arc's National Council of Self-Advocates, highlights the desire for equal opportunities and acceptance for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Let's come together to support and empower the disability community. #DisabilityPrideMonth #DisabilityPride #WeWantALifeLikeYours 🌟🌈👏 One of the most important ways to celebrate this month is by hiring individuals with disabilities. Disability Pride Month marks the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Why is Pride the right word to use to celebrate this anniversary? The ARC puts it best: “ …it challenges the outdated stereotypes and stigma that too often surround disabilities. Disability pride month reminds us that disability is not something to be ashamed of but rather a vital part of our rich human tapestry.“ Disability Pride is important to me because with all the talk about diversity, equity, and inclusion - disability is too often left out of the conversation. And yet, it’s the one group any one of us are a mere accident or diagnosis away from becoming a member of. Whether someone is born with a disability or ends up disabled at any point in their life, they have the right to pursue the life they choose to live. Disability is such an umbrella term. It encompasses physical disability, intellectual disability, psychiatric disability, sensory disability, and neurodivergence. So many people with disabilities don’t feel safe disclosing their disability. Disability Pride Month promotes a world where everyone is seen, heard, valued, and invited to contribute - regardless of their differences. It focuses on abilities first.

Celebrating Disability Pride Month In July, we honor the history, achievements, and struggles of the disability community. Disability Pride Month marks the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), passed on July 26, 1990, breaking barriers to inclusion. Despite the ADA, discrimination persists for the 1 in 4 U.S. adults living with a disability. That is why we celebrate this awareness, to highlight what's possible with true inclusion in the community workplaces. History of Disability Pride Month: The first Disability Pride Day was in Boston in 1990. Chicago hosted the first Disability Pride Parade in 2004. Now, events nationwide empower people with disabilities to take pride in who they are and what they do. 2024 Theme: "We Want a Life Like Yours Inspired by The Arc’s National Council of Self-Advocates, this theme reflects the disability community’s dreams for life experiences, including employment, they deserve. Hiring People With Disabilities: 85% of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are unemployed, despite wanting to work and having skills to contribute. Those employed work fewer than 13 hours a week on average, with less than one-fifth receiving workplace benefits. Disability inclusion is a proven good business decision. #DisabilityPride #ADA #CelebrateDiversity #BetterBottomLine #InclusiveWorkplace #AccessibilityMatters

July is Disability Pride Month! 🩶🩷💛🤍🩵💚🩶 Disability Pride Month is celebrated every year in July, the month the ADA was signed into law in 1990. It is a time to celebrate the strength, resilience, & diverse experiences of people with disabilities — one of many communities that has been marginalized in our country. Did you know that 1 in 4 adults in California has a disability? People with disabilities are significantly more likely to experience food insecurity compared to those without disabilities. Barriers such as lack of accessible transportation, higher medical costs, and discrimination in employment all contribute to this disparity. In July and always, let us honor and celebrate people with physical disabilities, emotional and psychiatric disabilities, sensory disabilities, neurodivergence, and any invisible or not-yet-diagnosed disabilities. Let us work together to create a safe, accessible, and hunger-free future for everyone. #DisabilityPrideMonth #DisabilityPride #EndHunger
